Further development for promotional project.
Commentary: These are changes made after feedback that I received from someone who pointed out that the baby oil wasn’t obvious enough. Therefore, I made the decision to change the compositions so the bottle was more obvious, so that the text would relate better with the imagery.
Additional feedback I received from my tutor was that perhaps there could be luminous elements to add to the radical theme of the my idea. Now that I had my imagery and the message I wished to convey, It was mentioned that I could expand the work by adding 2-3 purely typographic images that sit in between each poster. Reference made to ‘never mind the bullocks’ punk poster. Therefore these are my next steps and then moving onto refinement as well creating the 10 slide presentation for the final thing.
Development for the promotional project.
Next steps:
Keep on experimenting, and add letters. Perhaps add more collage/visual elements, put it through a photocopier, layer stuff on etc.. keep playing. Keep to the message.
Reminder of concept (In one sentence):
To challenge and question baby oil’s position within society.
Imagery so far for the promotional project.
Promotional project
Brief:
To promote a product given to us in an exciting new way. Has to make people view the product in a new light with an added element of surprise.
Object: Baby oil
Commentary: When doing my research on the this product, I found many different uses for it ranging from baby stuff (obviously), household chores, and fun science experiments. In terms of social context, baby oil is generally used for babies, however there’s also a sexual underbelly to this product. The image comes to mind of a naked female/male model drenched in baby oil within the pages of a Nuts magazine for example. This sort of imagery is perceived as provocative visuals that is kept out of the way of the eyes of the public.
I draw inspiration from Kim Kardashian’s breaking the internet advertisement. Certainly breaking the social etiquette of getting your kit off, the campaign took the world and especially social media by storm. This concept of rebellion against social rules moves smoothly into my next inspiration, punk rock. Snarling in the face of authority, this anarchist movement created a wave of publish-yourself artistic graphics from fane zines to popular artists collaborating on album covers and posters. Constantly pushing the boundaries of social ideals.
Concept: To bring the crude and sexual connotations of baby oil, that are usually frowned upon to be shown anywhere except a dirty magazine, out of its confined shell. Most importantly, to questions and challenge its position within todays society, using the radical visual language created by the punk rock movement to create a modern day twist as a platform for visual communication.
Method: To experiment with graphic manipulation and collage. “In the act of dismembering and reassembling the very images that were supposed to keep you down and ignorant, it was possible to counteract the violence of The Spectacle and to refashion the world around you.” John Savage.
