FACT CHECK: ICE detainment at the Sandpiper Apartments this morning (Monday, July 7) What we know: We have verified with four separate sources that someone was detained from Sandpiper apartments this morning. Everyone confirms there were agents in masks/vests. One source said he was handcuffed. Three confirmed that there was rough physicality involved. One source said the vests said ICE and one said they heard the agents identify themselves as ICE. The vehicles have been reported as a silver GMC SUV and a black GMC SUV. We know a 9-1-1 call was placed, we do not know if any local officials were dispatched.
Update: There is an ad hoc group formed through the People's Coalition of San Juan Island called the "SJI Rapid Response Team." They have trained on rapid response through WAISN (Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network) and are putting together a website/community chat with resources, phone number, and information around ICE sighting and detainments on island. Website will be up on July 15. The current phone number for the unit is 360-556-1410. They are seeking information re: sightings of the vehicles reported this morning.
Update: Sheriff’s office confirms. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17Jhg9QGaz/?mibextid=wwXIfr They did not dispatch any officers after receiving 9-1-1 calls about the incident.
