IRON LUNG SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT
Something about the life preserver just stuck with me, man: from its introduction and Simon casually tossing it to the ground (you can practically hear "The fuck good is that gonna do me?" in the motion), to its redeeming moment as a light source in the stranded sub, powered by Simon's own body (freshly out of water to activate the emergency light, he resorts to using his spit), to the very final shot of the film where the device fulfills its namesake as best it can, carrying the data that may save humanity amidst a oppressive ocean of red, bobbing along the surface all alone, waiting for rescue.
The absolute poetry of it; the ingenuity of utilizing limited tools in a sparse, unforgiving environment- the desperation or relying on this one tiny lifeline to save if not yourself , then maybe everyone else- the parallels between the life preserver and Simon himself: underestimated and appreciated, solitary, a beacon of light in a hopelessly dark situation.
My favorite character, honestly. 🤣
