What began as a Master's research project at the University of Saskatchewan has blossomed into an award-winning environmental education initiative inspiring restoration, stewardship, and citizen science across our community.

Chelsea's project, Ecological Grassland Restoration at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, addresses the challenge of invasive Smooth Brome across 33.5 hectares of grassland within Saskatoon's urban forest. Through research, restoration planning, and public engagement, the project envisions transforming degraded utility corridors into thriving native prairie habitat supporting pollinators, birds, wildlife, and biodiversity.

This remarkable work demonstrates how local conservation efforts can contribute to global sustainability goals while empowering communities to become active stewards of nature.

Please use caution near George Genereux Urban Regional Park as the Saskatoon Fire Department continues monitoring hot spots following the recent grass and brush fire near Highway 7 and Township Road 364.

Dry grass, strong winds, and extreme fire conditions across Saskatchewan mean even a small spark can quickly spread. Residents are reminded to avoid smoking or vaping in parks and trails, properly extinguish cigarettes, avoid open flames, and report suspicious activity or signs of fire immediately.

George Genereux Urban Regional Park is an important naturalized green space supporting birds, pollinators, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, and recreation within Saskatoon’s west side. Protecting our urban green spaces helps protect wildlife, air quality, community wellbeing, and ecological resilience.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area surrounding George Genereux Urban Regional Park on Tuesday, May 26, as the Saskatoon Fire Department responds to a grass and brush fire located along the western edge of the park near the CNR rail corridor.

Emergency crews are actively working to contain the fire and protect surrounding green spaces, infrastructure, and nearby habitats. Smoke may be visible from surrounding neighbourhoods as firefighters manage hot spots and prevent the flames from spreading through dry grasses and brush.

The 148-acre urban regional park is an important naturalized area within Saskatoon’s west side, providing habitat for birds, pollinators, small mammals, and native vegetation. During dry spring conditions, grasslands and brush areas can become highly vulnerable to fast-moving fires, especially during windy weather or periods of low moisture.

Members of the public are encouraged to stay clear of the area while emergency operations continue. Avoiding the site helps ensure public safety and allows firefighters unobstructed access to trails, service roads, and fire response zones.

Grass and brush fires can spread rapidly through naturalized urban areas due to dry vegetation, accumulated plant litter, and changing wind conditions. Firefighters often work quickly to create containment lines, extinguish smouldering vegetation, and monitor surrounding areas for flare-ups.

Urban naturalized parks play an important ecological role by supporting biodiversity, improving air quality, reducing stormwater runoff, and providing opportunities for recreation and environmental education. Protecting these spaces during wildfire or brush fire events is important not only for public safety, but also for maintaining healthy urban ecosystems.

A mother moose and calf have recently been observed near the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and the Southwest Off Leash Dog Park. These remarkable wildlife encounters remind us how important Saskatoon’s naturalized green spaces are for biodiversity and wildlife habitat.

If you see moose within city limits, please report sightings to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment at 306-933-6240 or the provincial TIPPS line at 1-800-567-4224. Conservation officers rely on public reports to monitor wildlife movement and determine whether the moose are moving through or remaining in the area.
