India and Sweden Upgrade Ties to Strategic Partnership
GOTHENBURG. India and Sweden have officially elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership following extensive high-level talks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson led delegation-level consultations to advance India-Sweden ties. Her Royal Highness Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, also participated in the meeting, conveying greetings from King Carl XVI Gustaf. Prime Minister Modi extended his best wishes to the King on the occasion of his 80th birthday. The leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations and acknowledged growing momentum in multiple sectors. This upgrade reflects a shared commitment to building ties rooted in democratic values, sustainability, and technological innovation.
The Four Pillars and Joint Action Plan
To operationalise this newly elevated status, the two leaders adopted the India-Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026-2030. This comprehensive framework expands collaboration across political, economic, technological, security, climate, and people-to-people domains. The strategic partnership will be guided by four specific pillars to streamline future institutional cooperation. These include Strategic Dialogue for Stability and Security, alongside Next-Generation Economic Partnership. The remaining pillars focus on Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity, and Shaping Tomorrow Together – People, Planet, Health and Resilience. This structured roadmap aims to double bilateral economic exchange within the next five years through targeted industrial synergies.
Deepening Trade, Innovation, and Defence Cooperation
The prime ministers noted that the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement opens a new phase. They expressed hope for its early implementation to further strengthen trade, investment, and technology linkages. PM Modi appreciated Sweden's continued engagement in clean technologies, advanced manufacturing, sustainable mobility, and digital transformation. The leaders launched the Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0 and the India-Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor. Prime Minister Kristersson praised India's advances in artificial intelligence and acknowledged the positive contribution of the Indian community. In the defence sector, Swedish companies establishing local production facilities marks a shift toward long-term industrial partnerships.
Global Developments and Counter-Terrorism
The consultations concluded with a broad exchange of views on pressing regional and global developments. Both leaders emphasied the urgency of comprehensive reforms in the United Nations and other multilateral organisations. Prime Minister Modi thanked Sweden for its continued support in the global fight against terrorism. He explicitly expressed gratitude for Sweden's support following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam last year. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to promoting global peace, resilient supply chains, and sustainable economic growth. The meeting underscored the growing importance of close cooperation between democratic nations in the current global environment.
