It was a brisk September morning and Lizzie was making her usual journey to work. It was tradition that on this journey she would stop off at the local coffee shop. The bell tingled as she walked through the door.
“Morning Lizzie!” A familiar voice rang through her ears, it was Cerys, her best friend and owner of the fine coffee establishment. The blonde girl gestured for Lizzie to come over to the counter. “How’s life? The usual?”
Lizzie did not have time to answer the question before Cerys dashed off to begin preparing the pumpkin spice latte. Cerys was always so cheerful and bubbly, quite the stark contrast to Lizzie’s more serious nature. Cerys slammed the coffee cup down infront of Lizzie at the counter. Lizzie cautiously took a sip of the hot beverage. She felt it warming her insides.
“You always make the best lattes” Lizzie smiled.
“Not anymore! This new employee has given me a run for my money!” Cerys chuckled. “You have to meet her, she’s coming in at three so she should be here right when you finish work. You better drop in!”
Lizzie dragged herself out of work. Another long day at the office. She remembered her promise to Cerys about meeting one the new employees and in honesty she could use a caffeine rush.
The familiar sound of the bell, the welcoming smell of coffee. This place almost felt like a home away from home.
“Lizzie you made it!” Cerys dashed over to where Lizzie was stood. “God you look freezing! I’ll whip you up something nice, in the meantime you go and introduce yourself, I’ll be right back!”
Lizzie glanced around the room, suddenly noticing the brunette working behind the counter. She turned round and smiled, Lizzie blushed, scratching the back of her head she carefully made her approach.
“H-hi, I’m Lizzie... well my actual name is Elisabeth but no one calls me that... everyone calls me Lizzie but sometimes Lizard... I really hate that nickname-”
“You’re rambling.” The girl chuckled, Lizzie grew even redder. “I’m Emily but you can call me Em. Plain and simple.” She gave a quick nod and returned to whatever she was doing at the coffee machine.
“So... how long have you been working here? I don’t usually come in during the afternoon.” Lizzie began fiddling with a piece of stray hair that had fallen from her messy bun because she was indie.
“About two weeks, I noticed an ad up on the window so I came in and spoke to Cerys. The rest is history I guess.”
“Glad to see you two are hitting it off!” Cerys returned with Lizzie’s coffee in hand. “I knew you would get along!” She grinned. “Em, I’m closing up early so you can clock off.”
Cerys was lazy and closed up early almost every day. Lizzie always wondered how this place was still in business, it felt like she was the only customer who ever came in here.
“Awesome! Lizzie can walk me home.” Em laughed, Lizzie just blushed.
The walk home was silent but they didn’t need words. Em glanced into Lizzie’s chocolate orbs every chance she got. She was intoxicated by this girl. They had only just met, this was ridiculous, she was being ridiculous. But was she? Lizzie could not possibly be feeling this same level of attraction, it only been an hour if that! All Em knew was that she had to see her again.
The leaves crunched under their feet as they reached the door to Em’s house.
“You’ll drop by the coffee shop again right?”
“I drop by everyday.” Lizzie laughed. “I’m never out the damn place.”
“I mean... when I’m working...” Em blushed.
“I’ll try my best to come in after work but if not...” Lizzie whipped out a crumbled receipt from her pocket and began scrawling on it. “Here’s my number, I’d love to meet up again.”
