I just wanted to point out that Jim had brought home animals before and asked mom to let him keep them, and we assume that she said no because there are none at the inn... So Morph was like his first pet, combined with the fact that John Silver was like his first father figure figure ever... But this point in the film, it's clear why he's so damn happy. He grew up too fast, and now, he can finally be the boy that he always wanted to be.
