Fun fact:

Poison dart frogs are only poisonous because of their diet. In the wild they tend to get their poison from venomous ants, but if fed anything other than that they lose their toxicity.

This is true! You can have dart frogs as pets without fearing for your life because the fruit fly diet pet darts usually eat doesn't give them toxicity :) Of course handling any pet frog for extended amount of time is not recommended because their permeable skin sucks the nasty human grease off your hand and its worse for the frog than its for you.

So I keep seeing art of Ribbit with a tadpole tail on various other platforms by different artists and I got curious if there's any frogs that keep their tails past the tadpole stage and looked it up the other day. Turns out there actually is a species of tailed frogs, they look nothing like the kind of frog Ribbit is but whatever it's a species of tailed frogs. But, there's just one little thing about this frog species.

Only the males keep their tails as adults.

Now whenever I see a drawing of Ribbit with a tail I can't help but see them as trans fem and I have a new idea for my own Ribbit design.

24th of September 2025: Atelopus petriruizi

Today’s critter may or may not be with us anymore: Atelopus petriruizi, a type of Stubfoot Toad [1]. If they do still exist, they would be found in central Colombia in the southern limits of Los Picachos National Park at streams in premontane forests [2].

That’s where they were found in 1993 and 1997. They’re around 2 cm in length [3], warty [4], and were named after Pedro Miguel Ruiz Carranza, who passed away in 1998, the original paper’s author’s teacher [3] and a prolific herpetologist who also frequently worked with the genus Atelopus [5].

Only 4 individuals were ever collected and haven’t been seen since their original description. As they haven’t been found in over 25 years and their habitat seems to be rather small, the IUCN has listed them as Critically Endangered, noting that they may even be possibly extinct [2].

The most serious threat to their existence was habitat loss due to illegal crops, but they may have also suffered losses due to chytridiomycosis [2]. This is an infectious disease in amphibians caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, and has been recorded to cause declines in populations of hundreds of amphibian species [6] including others of the genus Atelopus [7].
