I thoroughly believe those two men fell in love very fast. But I also believe neither of them did a singular thing about it.
It was the 60s. Being a mutant? Hard enough. Being Jewish AND a mutant? Even worse? BEING GAY AND A MUTANT? literally unthinkable. They have taken enough hits they ain’t putting themselves up on the chopping block ANOTHER WAY
these two gay men wanted separate things yes. Charles wanted to be a part of humans and Erik wanted mutants to be recognized as their own.
But both of these goals require them to be ‘model mutants’ in a way. Charles being gay would throw off everything, it’d make trying to bring people around to his ideology harder because there’s this wall of “he thinks being gay is right can we trust him on anything else?”. And Erik does not have the time or emotional wherewithal to deal with All That while he try’s to accomplish his goals.
plus! These men cannot feel an emotion normally to save their lives! See the raging Erik or the DOFP Charles, like omg coming out of the closet would disintegrate them! They could not handle the idea of disappointing the people around them or WORSE the confrontation of being in love with the guy Thats against you in every way.
it is a tragedy because it was never meant to be! These two men cannot get over themselves to get to eachother! They are both right in some ways and both wrong in some ways and both IN A RIVER IN EGYPT!
