Emma Donoghue, Frog Music
Book Review: Frog Music by Emma Donoghue
Frog Music takes place in San Francisco in the 1870s at the height of a heat wave and a smallpox epidemic. The book mostly deals with the community of French immigrants including Blanche a burlesque dancer/prostitute, her partner and his best friend, and Jenny, a cross-dressing, frog-catcher. Most of the characters at the larger story itself are based on true events.
Based on the description, I was so excited to read this book. They had me at smallpox! The writing itself was captivating and made for a quick read, but overall I felt the story was lacking. Especially Jenny, who was such an interesting and complex character; I wish the author had fleshed out more of her story rather than subtly hinting at things.
Some of the descriptions of sexual acts were unnecessarily graphic and didn't really contribute anything to the story. I am by no means a prude, but it was simply unexpected.
Overall I was disappointed. I felt that so much more could have been done with the story, but it was generally an enjoyable read.
Heard this song about 5 years ago and still not over it. Alex is singing this all the time. And I haven't met anyone who doesn't like it.
