I finally got around to putting some art up in my apartment.

Someone needs to put firefly characters into Hogwarts houses ♡

Okay I’m not going to lie - I have thought about this a LOT. Pretty much since I saw Firefly for the first time 11+ years ago. So. Here are my thoughts:

First of all, my theory on the Hogwarts Houses is this: the Hat places you where you will be best nurtured. The examples I like using for this are Hermione and Luna. At first glance, Hermione seems like she should be in Ravenclaw because she is bookish, very witty, and a quick study. But Hermione doesn’t need to be around more bookish people, she needs to be around people who will challenge her. Hence, Gryffindor. Luna has gone through a lot by the time she gets to Hogwarts: her mother’s death, her father’s reclusion - what she needs are people who will sit with her and study Crumple-Horned Snorkacks. That’s Ravenclaw.

And with that preamble, here are my Firefly Hogwarts Houses:

Mal: Gryffindor(While the Alliance troops are shooting at him and his fellow soldiers are trying to hide) “Woo-hoo! I’m right here! I’m right here! You want some of this? Yeah, you do! Come on! Come on!”Mal has a lot going on, but he is most definitely an act-first-questions-later kind of guy. He is very protective of his found family, but he has great compassion for others in situations of oppression. His heart is always in the “do the right thing” place, even if his methods are not always by the book.

Zoe: Gryffindor“In the time of war, we never would have left a man behind”Zoe is a soldier first. She leads when the situation asks her to, but she knows how to handle herself as a second-in-command. She rushes headfirst into situations and makes her plan up as she goes. 

Wash: Hufflepuff“Can I make a suggestion that doesn’t involve violence, or is this the wrong crowd for that?“Wash is a mediator - he uses sarcasm and humor to diffuse situations. He’s very hardworking (he was second in his class in flight school!) and is probably the most trustworthy person on the crew.

Kaylee: Hufflepuff(I can’t think of a witty quote to put here. Kaylee’s one-liners tend to be more matter-of-fact or just heartwarming)Speaking of heartwarming, Kaylee is the very definition of The Heart of the team. She is unfailingly kind and open-minded towards everyone. She only sees the good in people, occasionally to a fault. She wants the world to be fair and good.

Simon: Slytherin(After knocking Jayne out) “I-I just didn’t feel comfortable with him in charge”This is probably my most contested sorting. Simon has one agenda: keep his sister safe. He is ruthless in this goal, almost single-minded. He puts River’s well-being before his own, but both of theirs above literally everything else. 

River: Ravenclaw“The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems.”I know, I know - alliteration for the Tams. But River is a textbook Ravenclaw. She’s smart, resourceful, and eager to learn everything she can. She studies everything she sees: from ship specs to patterns in a folk dance to weasel-like businessmen.

Jayne: Hufflepuff“Make something up. Don’t tell ’em what I did.”Jayne has two moments of vulnerability: the one quoted above and in The Message when he receives the hat. The letter there mentions that he sent money home for his family to take care of his younger siblings. These are the moments that reveal his softer side, what I believe is his true nature: his steadfast long-term loyalty to his family, both chosen and blood.

Book: Slytherin(Jayne: One day you’re gonna tell us all how a preacher knows so damn much about crime.) “No, I won’t.”This is mostly based on the Shepherd’s Tale comic. If you haven’t read it yet, it’s about how Book went from being an abused child to a street thief to a member of the Independants to an undercover Alliance officer to a member of the Abbey to part of Serenity’s crew. He is cunning, smart, and very self-protective throughout the whole thing. 

Inara: Ravenclaw“I don’t suppose you’d find it up to the standards of your outings. More conversation and somewhat less petty theft and getting hit with pool cues.”Inara is probably the smartest person on the ship who isn’t River. She studied hard to become a Companion, and she is very careful and controlled in everything she does. She analyzes first, thinks second, and acts third. Not to mention all of her literature references. I like to think she reads everything she can get her hands on in her spare time.

NYCC 2015

This is your captain speaking. I am at NYCC all weekend dressed as Malcolm Reynolds! I'll post a picture of myself tomorrow.
