The Wyoming Valley Massacre - A Brutal Day in the Revolutionary War
On July 3, 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, a Patriot militia force in the Wyoming Valley (modern-day Pennsylvania) was attacked by a combined group of Loyalist fighters and Iroquois warriors allied with Britain. The Patriots were quickly overwhelmed in what turned into a chaotic and one-sided battle.
As the fighting broke apart, many of the retreating soldiers were hunted down across the valley. Around 360 Patriot troops were killed, making it one of the most shocking frontier attacks of the war.
News of the massacre spread quickly and caused panic in Patriot communities, deepening fears about frontier warfare and Native American involvement in the conflict. It also led to harsh retaliations in later campaigns.
