the day is finally here--he uploads to chatter the prizes that his contestants won for the 2018 wallace cup!

❝hello from alola!❞ he declares. ❝as you all know, the wonderful kamui, antarcticite and lucas adams have won our most recent wallace cup in spectacular fashion. for their prizes, they shall receive pokémon based on the content of their performances. after a few days of thinking, i have decided upon their rewards. without further ado, i shall reveal them to you know!❞

❝kamui, first in place, first to receive: you displayed a dynamic and elegant sense of both coolness and beauty in your performances that would make any experienced coordinator proud. as you are in first place, you will receive two pokémon. in honor of your deep understanding of multiple categories, i offer you a larvesta. as larvesta ages, it will grow into a pokémon that harnesses both beautiful and clever moves to fullest effect. but as well as an honor, i also offer you a challenge. it would be all too easy to give you a gardevoir, or a milotic, or any other pokémon commonly associated with beauty--such simplistic choices would insult your skill. instead, i will bestow upon you an alolan grimer, a pokémon that one would be hard-pressed for a coordinator to raise, with the full faith that you with your creativity can transform it into a contest star.❞

MOVE AND COMBINATION USE: 35 / 40

Wow. That’s most of what I can say. You turned both of your Pokémon into aesthetic juggernauts that swept the field with their aplomb. I can’t name which combination of yours was my favorite--although I’m partial to the times where you turned Salamence into a living missile the way you did. My only caution is--you used rather much raw power for the Cool category, which is more reserved in its displays of prowess.

RESPONSE TO OPPONENT: 35 / 40

I’ll be a bit harsh here: you could have dealt with your opponent’s moves more artistically. You were calm and level-headed in your responses, which is essential in the Cool category, not to mention you always came back swinging with twice the power that Keith threw at you. But I saw little artistry in how the opponent’s moves themselves were handled. Next time try to intercept them with moves of your own or redirecting their energy instead of merely getting hit.

STRATEGY AND TACTICS: 40 / 40

You had your opponent cornered at every turn, forcing him on the defensive throughout the entire match. Your constant innovation was nearly impossible for your opponent to keep up with, and each one of your moves was carefully considered. There’s really nothing I can say here except that you served as a model for how tacticians should behave. Amazing.

TEAM EFFORT: 40 / 40

It was a joy to see you and your Pokémon working together, trusting each other--and also to see you follow your Pokémons’ lead--letting them attack unprompted--instead of merely commanding them the entire time. This is a valuable skill for a Trainer, learning when to trust their Pokémons’ instincts. Wonderful!

AESTHETIC QUALITY: 37 / 40

You gave us a mesmerizing array of visuals, from the guns to the illusory city to the people made from insects (disgusting in the best possible way!) One thing I could point out was that sometimes you seemed to use the same sorts of imagery repeatedly, especially with Infestation--I know it’s hard to vary things up sometimes with only four moves, but you should try, perhaps by using more Hidden Power and Recover.

TECHNICAL MASTERY: 38 / 40

Oh my goodness. Are you all okay? You had me fearing for your safety at times, and yet everything went so smoothly. I truly have little I could criticize here. You challenged your Pokémon (though I did take a few points off because you challenged your Zoroark more than your Toxapex) and it surely paid off. While your Zoroark had more stage presence than your Toxapex, this isn’t enough to warrant more than taking off a handful of points. Taking off more would do a disservice to your impressive feats.

TRAINER TALENT: 40 / 40

From the dancing to the gun-filled imagery, your act was so full of passion and courage that it simply blew me away. So much energy, elegant yet fierce! You and your Pokémon truly moved as one, with all of you equally sharing the spotlight. You earned yourself a perfect score in particular by letting yourself get so close to your Zoroark’s flames--superb. You ought to be proud of your accomplishment today.

EXEMPLIFICATION OF CATEGORY: 38 / 40

This Appeal was Tough and then some. You matched the visuals to the lyrics’ philosophical meaning and gave illusion after illusion like in Clever, constantly misleading the audience when it came to what they should expect. You send a message about life, death and inner turmoil--the conflict in the world mirrors the conflict in oneself. You also evoke a dark Beauty with your dance moves, although sometimes the dancing was too Beautiful--try balancing it out with sharper, more aggressive motions outside the use of finger guns. But by reaching out to horror themes, you show us a side of Tough that isn’t often seen. Hats off to your artistic vision!

ORIGINALITY: 35 / 40

Your Zoroark was more than just the standard illusionist--it was a Tough psychological tormentor, and your Toxapex (though its role was less thought-out) had a briefly interesting part as a precision worker. You strayed close to the “staged fight” trope, but ultimately avoided and/or subverted it. While as I’ve said before the way you use certain moves looks similar to each other, you did make some attempt to reinvent the way that those moves were used--especially with the Infestation’s buzzing to complement the horror of the song. Overall a highly individual and inventive piece.

“Hey, are you okay? You look a little...” Well, miserable was the word than sprung to mind.

Ordinarily Lyra would never have noticed wallhugger like them alone but they were sitting on the opposite side of the bench that she's sat down on to retie her sandal and they’d caught her eye. Not only because they had hair so strikingly pale it was impossible to ignore but also because they seemed so dower, almost uncomfortable. It was strange, how could anybody look that upset when they were attending such a fun and lively party?
