I have a Very Serious Coworker who is from American persimmon country, how weird is it to bring him some kaki persimmon and ask for notes on how they compare? Is it like, charming weird?
The coop had these crab apples — “Wickson” apples — which I am 80% sure are the crab apples of my youth in a neighborhood built in a fruit orchard. (Everyone had like six fruit trees in their yard and the neighborhood children ran like a pack with strong opinions on plum quality).
I used to find them in the woods periodically, at old homestead sites. I assumed they were used for pectin or something. Reading indicates that they are instead Quite Rare, believed to be lost until 2017, and that I have apparently stumbled across literally every known population and stuffed my cheeks like a chipmunk.
Did you know that the time I found an enormous orchard of century-old fruit and nut trees with multiple crab apple trees, that’s not just what some homesteads were like, that’s one family and their documented commitment to Burbank-level crop development?
The child keeps stealing them and eating them, I have inculcated him with my love of crabapple crosses.
