The words fall on her ringing ears.
Deena’s talking about the danger they face still, but it all feels a million miles away as she processes the news. Nick Goode, Sheriff of Union County, the boy who brought her back from the precipice of the underworld, is the reason for all this. He’s the reason happy-go-lucky Ryan Torres murdered his best friend, why Deena’s girlfriend is tied up possessed in Ziggy’s bathroom; the reason why sweet Tommy Slater murdered countless innocent children at Nightwing. The reason the milkman littered her body with scars that go far deeper than skin and bone.
The reason Cindy is dead.
Nick, who breathed life back into her lungs as the world seemingly ended around her. Who looked past the Shadyside blue, who remembered the names of every camper regardless of where they came from.
It feels like ice, flash freezing in her veins, numbing and burning her from inside out.
"I-I called him," she sputters, legs crumbling under her as she falls to the ground, "I thought that he could help us." It still hasn't registered; she's seeing that week in 1978 play through her head like a technicolour reel of greatest hits. Nick’s arms, gently but firmly holding her back from doing something reckless; Nick, who looked at her in awe as she flipped him off, who dangled the keys to Science and Nature in front of her and later helped her get back at Sheila. Nick, who took an axe to the leg for her. Who brought her back when Cindy lay dying, an arm’s length away from her.
Nick, who took her heart, painted it red and golden, and then shattered it only to set fire to the remains.
Another! Ziggy is my favorite but Nick is a close second!

Sam clears her throat, pen still tapping. “Sorry.”
Deena looks uninterested even as she says, “For what?”
“You don’t look excited to be partnered with me.”
Deena rolls her eyes. “I’m not excited to be partnered with anyone because this assignment is bullshit and this class is bullshit,” she says frankly. “Not always about you, princess.”
