the kingsley building sat like a crown in the city skyline — all glass, steel, and teeth. its penthouse office wasn’t built for comfort. it was built for control. high ceilings. cold marble. dark wood. everything lined with quiet power and the hush of surveillance behind every wall.
everything had a place, everything served a purpose... including her.
cassius didn’t bother looking up when the door clicked shut behind her. he already knew it was amelie — her footsteps too careful to be careless.
“sit,” he said, pen dragging across the folder in front of him. her name was there. her mother’s. figures, dates, the weight of a debt that hadn’t budged. when he finally lifted his gaze, it was unreadable — but heavy enough to press a person flat. “you’ve been quiet,” he said, leaning back in the leather chair. “that either means you’re learning...” a pause. “or you’re planning to make my life harder than it needs to be.”
then came the smirk — slow, dry, and never warm.
“let’s hope it’s the first one. i don’t waste investments. and today, you’re earning your place.”
