Being excommunicated from the brigade felt like both he and Velma had been pushed to the sidelines. But the thing about Harvard Hargrove II is that he is not a man made for sidelines. The problem, which is quick to discover, is that by not allowing them to go beyond Main Street, it practically means that the hurt and anguish has to be stored in the same place... and Harvard’s a ticking time bomb of both. Spotting Bertram Montez is like the devil knocking at his door and pleading to be let in (if the devil had Velma’s voice and sounded tempting). “If it isn’t the man of the hour!” And anyone walking past who is unfamiliar with their dynamic may mistake his tone for fondness - but there’s something maniacal about the short huff of laughter that accompanies it. Something dark that simmers in the mirth of dark brown eyes. “Not with your girlfriend, I see. Don’t tell me she’s growing inconvenient for you too?”
