"mmph!?" ( from Kohaku over on @shcrdcdlifc Koda be curious and Kenai probably be questioning his little brother’s sudden action xD )

Snickering, Kenai twitched an ear and grinned.

“Heh-heh… w-what’re you doing, Koda?”

The cub had poor Kohaku’s jaws pried open with his two paws. “I’m lookin’ at his teeth!” He tilted his head. “He doesn’t have sharp ones like us, does he?”

“He’s a human, buddy,” Kenai replied, “and… I think you’re hurting him a little.”

He grabbed Koda’s scruff and pulled him back a foot or so; the little bear didn’t protest, but he did blink at the boy curiously. “Huh. Cool!”

The Confession.

This is my version of how Kenai’s confession to Koda- about killing his mother- went, with the deleted scenes included! I’ll share the link to the video at the end of the post.

For many hours that felt more like years, Kenai lay on a cliffside rock, staring out at the gorgeous sunset landscape before him.

Usually, it would’ve comforted him to see such beauty, knowing that the world he lived in harbored something like this.

But this time, it did nothing.

He heard Koda sneaking up on him from behind a ridge on the rock, but he didn’t even react. He merely blinked when the cub leapt onto his back. “RAAAR!!”

Koda looked down at him, grinning bright, and Kenai did little more than lift his head and glance back at him.

“Scared ya again, huh?” Koda laughed.

“Yeah…” Kenai looked down.

“Where have you been? You look horrible!”

Kenai sat up, causing Koda to slide off of his back. “Koda-”

“My mom always says, ‘if ya eat too much fish, you should just lie down’!” The little grizzly ran around to the larger one’s other side.

“Koda…” Kenai glanced down. “There’s… somethin’ I, uh…” He broke off for a moment, taking in a short breath. “Y-you know that story you told me last night?”

“Yeah!” Koda replied, looking cheerfully up at him.

“Well, I- I have a story to tell you.”

Koda picked a few berries from a patch of them at his side as he sat next to the older bear. “Really? What’s it about?” He passed a branch to Kenai, who simply put it down.

He didn’t have any appetite, despite not having eaten for at least a day.

“Well, it’s… kind of about a man, and… kind of about a bear,” Kenai began as gentle snowflakes began to fall from the sky.

“But… mostly, it’s about a monster.”

He took another breath. “…a monster who did something so bad, that the great spirits came down.”

Koda watched him with interest, his dark eyes wide, ears lifted and listening closely.

Kenai reluctantly went on. “There was… all this wind… a-a-and lights…”

He waved a paw across the air. “…and they pulled him up, way, way up into the sky.”

Koda munched on the berry plant, the leaves crunching in his teeth. He was looking up at the sky now, just as Kenai was.

“And when he came down again…” Kenai slowly lowered his paw. “…he’d been changed into a bear.”

Koda looked at him as his companion did the same to him. “Woah…!”

“Yeah,” Kenai whispered, looking away. Guilt, regret, and great sadness clawed at his heart and made him feel like he was so heavy, he was made of stone.

With no other choice but to keep telling his tale, he went on.

“Only he didn’t know anything about being a bear.”

His eyes were once again downcast. “How to walk… how to drink… how to fish…” Kenai looked over at Koda, who grinned again.

“Just like YOU!”

The cub leapt into Kenai’s forelegs, giggling.

An even deeper pain stabbed into Kenai’s chest, but he managed to whisper “yeah” again, wrapping one foreleg around Koda and lifting the other to stroke his head.

“But lucky for him, he met this little bear who showed him how to do all those things. And…”

Koda hugged him tighter.

“…a whole lot more.”

Kenai hugged him back.

“A bear that he’d do anything for. A bear that was like, um… like, a…”

“A brother?” Koda asked, peering up at him. He was still embracing Kenai; tears pricked in his eyes, and he shut them, turning his head away.

He picked the young cub up for a moment and placed him back down at his side.

“Koda… I did something very wrong.”

Now Koda was beginning to get a little concerned, but he still had no idea of the truth.

Not yet.

“What’d you do, Kenai…?”

Struggling to keep his composure, Kenai kept his head turned away. “I… I-I killed a bear…” His voice cracked.

Koda was horrified, and he gasped softly, standing up and backing up a few steps. “I… I don’t like this story…”

Kenai turned to look at the bear who’d believed in him.

Trusted him.

Loved him.

“Koda, your mother’s not coming.”

The cub’s eyes filled with tears, too. “No… no…!” he whimpered, finally realizing what had happened.

“I didn’t know, Koda,” Kenai pleaded. “I swear, I didn’t know-…”

But it was much too late to repair the damage that had been done.

Koda whirled around and raced away, headed into the snow-blanketed forest.

“Koda!”

Kenai watched the cub run for a few moments, tears streaming down his face; panting in his guilt and shame, he hurriedly wiped them away with one of his paws before he rushed into the trees.

Koda scaled a tree as quick as he could to get away from him, and once he was out of sight atop a branch, he wrapped his front legs around the tree trunk and began to cry.

Kenai looked around after running a short way into the woods, his eyes wide and his breaths coming in short huffs. The wind had picked up, ruffling his fur, but he didn’t care how cold it was.

“Koda!” he called into the forest, his ears pinned back. “I-I’d give anything if-…” He stumbled over his words, finding that they seemed to catch in his throat before he could get them out completely.

“Koda, I wish I could-…”

Giving up on words, Kenai stared up into the trees in one last attempt to find Koda. He hung his head, gritting his teeth behind a pair of closed black lips.

Then he lifted his paw, and there in the snow was the print of a bear.

Kenai looked down at it, and he blinked, eyebrows lifting. He dragged his claws across it, making it look like a human handprint.

“I’m sorry, Koda… I’m so sorry…”

Main Verse.

“Kenai!”

“Huh?” Kenai looked up from lying down in the den, blinking sleepily at Koda. The bear cub looked alarmed, and Kenai stood up immediately, startled. “Wh-what’s wrong? A hunter?”

“No!” Koda said. “There’s a lil’ fly on the ground, Kenai! We gotta help ‘er! I told ‘er we would!”

“…what?” Kenai was puzzled. “What do you mean, ‘a fly on the ground’?”

“C’mon, I’ll show you!” Koda took off in the other direction, and, sighing, Kenai followed him.

“Look!”

Eventually, Koda pointed with a claw to a tiny little fly, shivering on the snow-covered ground. She looked totally miserable and a little paler than she should’ve been.

Kenai blinked again. “Koda… what do you want me to do?”

“Warm ‘er up, Kenai!” Koda bent down and whispered to the fly, “don’t worry, my brother’s gonna help!”

“How?” Kenai inquired, totally confused. Why did Koda care so much about a fly?

“We gotta take ‘er back to the den and warm ‘er up! Pleeeeeeeease?” Koda begged, putting his front paws together and sticking out his bottom lip.

Kenai raised an eyebrow, but obliged. “Uhhh, ok…”

He scooped the fly up and onto his head, carefully shaking the snow off, and started back towards his and Koda’s den.
