The hallway above Latte Love was quiet, save for the soft creak of floorboards. Maya stood outside of her apartment door, juggling her keys in one and a brown paper bag with the Latte Love logo in the other, when the sound of movement caught her attention. She looked up to see Mara emerging from the apartment just down the hall. “Mara, hi!” she called out with a bright smile. Mara and her friend were her newest neighbors and she was eager to welcome them since they hadn’t been in Blue Harbor very long. “I’ve got goodies if you’re interested! Fresh pastries!” she said, shaking the bag in the air. The scent of cinnamon and butter was wafting from it and Maya hoped as her neighbor drew closer it would tempt her to chat for a few minutes.

He’d been back on his floor for all of maybe five minutes when the alert rang out, his own phone chirping with the call of it. Brows furrowed, mind still far too hazy and pleasantly numb to read the words on the first attempt. Or a second. The third however, had an instant tightening in his chest he hadn’t felt since, well. He couldn’t dwell on that evening too hard in this moment, no matter. A quick press of screen had his phone at his ear, ringing...ringing...voicemail “ Fuck.” Alexandre muttered, sliding down the frame of the door until his legs could surrender to the cold hardwood floors. His mind was spinning faster now, a dizzying crash from the high he’d felt just moments before. It was a few too long feeling minutes before an affirmative text back was given, a sigh of relief escaping him into the silence. Thank fuck for small miracles. “God this entire place is a disaster.”

He was quick to rise then, determined and  heading straight for the cupboards and the whiskey stored behind some tea he’d seen shoved in front of it just that morning. Two, three, four pulls from the bottle and the warmth of it eases the ache, bringing him slowly back to that pleasant haze he’d had before the panic set in his bones. Bottle loose in hand, he heads towards his rooms through the living area and --- well well WELL.

To put in in simple safe for public consumption words — it was his personal favorite. The two of them at the library late, right before it closed. Her in that sweater that hung off her just so, a table in the back aisles of the criminal law section. Her legs wrapped around him as he picked her up, her back to the wall, muffling sounds into necks and hands and bruising kisses and then –

yeah, it was a pretty good dream.

Eventually it would change, shift to a type of dream he’d never mutter aloud because the realities of it happening to someone with his past? If it was anything, a pipe dream at best.
