For River’s birthday, Bowie created a scrapbook to commemorate their twenty years of friendship. Though it barely scratches the surface, the notebook is filled with photos from throughout the years, handwritten poems and lyrics from mutually loved songs, little memories and anecdotes, letters written like diary entries for River’s eyes only, and much more. It’s a collection of their shared history, something Bowie has been working on and pouring her heart into for months. In addition to this, she woke them up this morning with music, breakfast in bed, and a cake made from scratch – which she (regretfully) let Fox decorate. 

To my better half, my beating heart,  

Every day, whether we've been together or apart, is better because I know you. You are the bravest, most beautiful, most inspiring soul I know and have known. Twenty-nine, at times, wasn’t the kindest, I know, but I could not be more proud of you. I cannot wait to see what a beautiful, transformative journey your thirties will be. A new era is upon us, baby, and I’m ready for the ride! I hope you enjoy your gift just as much as I enjoyed putting it together over the last few months. I had to call my momma for some of these pictures of us in our butch era. Baby, we’ve come so, so far, but I can’t wait to see where we’re going.  

For every star there is in the sky, I love you twice as much. Happy Birthday, River.

It was a picture they sent to River and Fox of Ziggy and Stardust, their gray Sphynx cat and black cat, getting in the way of the artsy nude Bowie was trying to take. The text read: "come get y'all babies".
