― there was a huge part of jake that wanted to just send her to voicemail, but he was trying to not be an asshole about it, even if part of him was hurt. someone from her past had showed up and she all but slammed the door to her apartment in his face when he came by. the truth was, despite how they felt about each other, both her and jake kept their secrets. jake, just because he didn’t want to talk about it. her? he didn’t know what she was hiding. picking up the phone, he didn’t say anything and let her jump right into the apology. he remained quiet for another moment. “if you’re ashamed of me, i’d rather you just be honest about it, you know. it wouldn’t be the first time a woman was ashamed to be with me.”

━ as if the cop didn’t have enough anger issues to begin with, spotting someone grabbing onto veronica’s arm had him seeing red. he was an older male, but that was the extent of the facts that had registered with him before he was making a beeline over and roughly shoving the man off of her. “who the fuck do you think you are, grabbing her like that?” another shove to the man’s chest had him also reacting by taking a swing at him. the truth was, jake allowed the fist to connect with his face, because it gave him even more of a reason to swing back - so he did. before jake could continue after him, he felt soft hands grabbing onto his arm this time, instantly calming him and he turned toward the much shorter brunette. “who was that?” he questioned, tilting his face away so that she couldn’t concern herself with any marks he might have because he needed answers first.

― jake had been lucky in many ways. the aftermath of what he had experienced in atlanta had him running to new york to get away, but he couldn’t always run from the nightmares. it was something he never spoke about; something he never even told veronica about. she had been on the receiving end of witnessing some of the nightmares though. sweat beaded against his forehead as he sat upright when she woke him. his back was soaked, although the lack of a shirt made it less sweaty than it could have been. he was breathing hard, but the moment he was awake and upright, he focused on inhaling and exhaling. after another moment, he turned to meet her gaze. “i’m gonna get some water.” he mumbled, pushing the covers to the side to stand upright.

― jake had learned a lot from his past failings as a boyfriend - if one could even call him that. not getting attached to anyone and not letting anyone get attached to him had been his preference for a long time. then everything changed. however, that didn’t mean he still didn’t slip up or do ‘stupid guy things’, according to veronica. so, jake zoned out not long after she had started to flip out on him for something or another. instead, he started to make different faces to completely throw her off from whatever it was she was mad at him about. “okay, well then, be mad at me while getting into the car so we can head out, my arm is gonna fall off holding this door open for you.” sure, he wasn’t out of the woods yet, but at least he had gotten her to smile.

━ “you are the only person to have ever said that to me,” the cop let out a small chuckle as he handed off her favorite drink from starbucks. sure, the cordon had changed him in ways he never thought possible but his track record with women was still deplorable. “anyway, i should head back to the squad car before my partner puts on the sirens. he gets bored when i make him wait too long.” his head tilted in the direction, “call me if you need anything?”
