Now, whether it's Caleb, Zayne, Sylus, Xavier or Rafayel who they watch over is to be decided, but I am leaning heavily towards Caleb and Sylus. Caleb cause he's also a stalker and not being able to keep an eye on ai!reader through cameras and security footage would drive him nuts and Sylus... Well... Idk, I think he would figure out something is different (no soul talking + his aether core can't get a read on them) pretty fast but I think he would also be very intrigued by this one person he can't read.
Plot twist: turns out that reader does have an actual body, but it's trapped somewhere, connected to millions of cables that lead to screens and computers, barely even any humanity left to it because of all the alterations. And their memory of it is locked off somewhere because of the trauma.
Could be created by Ever to monitor people, and instead of just one it's all of them, including mc...
It could also be that she's split into two, with her body still reacting to commands and orders, and her consciousness completely blocked from Ever's access so they can't see what reader sees when they hang out with the 6 of them, only the information they curiously look up (books, recipes, pictures of the outside world, stories, knowledge about locations, customs and people they absorb like a sponge) and memories of their life before Ever playing over and over during the times she's been shut down or is in sleep mode.
Idk, maybe they get broken out of there after mc and the lads are done with Ever and they finally get to feel their warmth and touches, and taste all the things they were curious about....
Knowing that they don't have a taste, they'd probably eat everything Xavier makes without flinching or complaining about it, not feeling any sickness later. Hell, if they keep that fact to themselves for long enough, they might even be like "it's good! I like it!" with a happy smile and continue eating like nothing, to the complete horror of the rest of the guys. It's not until one of them decides to test out if they'd really eat just about anything that they'd probably realize reader can't taste things.
I've been having a Zayne x Ilkay brain rot, so I'm gonna share it with y'all:
There's two scenarios:
1. A timeline where Ilkay and Zayne end up in a relationship instead of Ilkay & Xavier. That one starts with Zayne as his doctor since Ilkay is a hunter. This one is purely for the virgin x virgin smut tag, I might turn it into an x reader au if it gets far enough.
2. I have an episode in the drafts where Xavier fakes his death and disappears, leaving Ilkay to deal with the aftermath. I wrote this episode before I decided to put Kaden, Eira, Irie and Taiko in the same universe and made them friends.
Naturally, on both of them Eira and Zayne don't end up together, but I guess Eira is still a friend of Ilkay's and has a partner in the Arctic. Or maybe something happened to Eira, idk, I haven't thought about those details yet.
First scenario came about because I was thinking about how it's canon that Zayne was never with anyone else before mc, and I went for virgin x virgin thoughts, but instead of x reader I went for Illie. I've been daydreaming a lot about Ilkay, so, you'll have to forgive me for that.
How do they even become friends?
They bond over their unrequited feelings; Ilkay over Xavier, Zayne over Nevaeh.
Zayne scolds Ilkay enough times (over his sleep schedule and somewhat reckless injuries) that Ilkay grows comfortable and treats him in a less formal way. He calls him "Doc," "Doccy-doc," and "Dr. Zayne" constantly, especially during moments where he's clearly trying to distract Zayne from giving him a scolding, always accompanied by a sweet/snack being pushed across the table in his direction.
Ilkay witnesses how Zayne looks at Nevaeh as she walks towards Kaden & Sylus, and he just blurts out "Is that how I looked?" and doesn't even elaborate when Zayne asks what he means. (Ilkay fell quietly for Xavier, but that distance could never be fully breached and when he saw how Xavier looked at Nev's, he started working towards letting go and getting over him.)
They start hanging out outside of Akso hospital—
Trying new restaurants and bakeries. At Ilkay's place, where he always ends up cuddling Tichi on the couch whether he planned on it or not. The first time he saw the cat, he was surprised that it didn't run away from him and instead just rubbed its lirol head into his hand. Ilkay pretty much just handed Tichi over to him without a second thought, and Zayne was left frozen at the entrance because he'd never gotten that far with a car before. (Ilkay helped him take off his coat while Zayne still held Tichi with one arm, and then left some slippers aside for him to exchange his shoes for. He spent that entire first time there holding Tichi for as long as the cat let him. Ilkay got some major cuteness aggression over it)
The exchange music and go to concerts together—
Zayne's playlist has a few songs that diverge from his usual metal & electronic music, all thanks to Ilkay. If Ilkay didn't hum the song or directly shared with him because he was just too obsessed with it, it's because it was playing softly in his apartment and Zayne found himself enjoying it enough to ask for the title.
Ilkay has a playlist that is almost a replica of Zayne's, it's strictly metal and electronic songs from artists Zayne himself has mentioned and some other songs he found that reminded him of Zayne. Those always find their way to Zayne whenever he listens to them.
And naturally, since Ilkay is a giant melomaniac (person who loves music) he's always dragging Zayne to performances and concerts whenever they can go. It's Zayne's favorite artist, how could he not buy tickets so Zayne could experience them live? (He always asks about his schedule first, he doesn't want to cross boundaries)
And then comes the big scene: their first kiss together.
Ilkay already has some experience kissing, Zayne does not.
They're watching a movie, or a show, or whatever. They're sitting on the couch, and Ilkay keeps leaning towards him as the night progresses and he gets more comfortable. At some point, his head ends up on Zayne's shoulder while they're having a soft conversation about what they're watching– jokes, comments, predictions and reactions– something happens that has Ilkay dying of laughter, to the point where Zayne has to pause it, and then rewind it so Ilkay can see it again and laugh even harder. Of course, Zayne laughs too because Ilkay's joy is infectious, and they spend five minutes just laughing. When laughter dies down they're closer than they were before and both of them lean into the kiss without even thinking about it.
They end up ignoring the tv in favor of making out on the couch until they fall asleep (poor boys where already tired as fuck) In the morning—
Brief intermission here to write the following scene:
"Okay, tell me when to stop," Ilkay takes the sugar and starts adding spoonful after spoonful of sugar into Zayne's drink. When Zayne stays quiet after the fourth spoon, he looks up briefly, just to check. Zayne doesn't say anything, so he keeps going. By the tenth spoonful he can't help laughing.
"Zayne," he's a bit hysterical as he says his name, giggling and shaking as he tries to control his laughter. He adds another spoon of sugar, "Zayne, please," Zayne won't be able to provide him the mercy that he seeks, but he can't help asking him as he adds another spoon. It gets to 15 and Ilkay can't find it in himself to keep going. The spoon goes back into the container, and Ilkay can barely breathe, "Who–" a squeak, "Who would've thunk–" he holds his head in his hands, his shoulders shake violently, "A doctor, being a fiend for sugar."
"I mean, I knew, but I didn't think it was like that." He peeks through his fingers to look at Zayne, who stands beside him, unapologetically adding more sugar into his cup, "I should've taken that 100% sugar drink as the warning it was." He's gentle when he stops Zayne from adding another spoon, "Please, that's enough, you'll get a toothache. At this point, that's sugar with a bit of tea."
With that ice breaker, they talk about it. Ilkay is honest about not regretting it and wanting more, in his words "I don't want to deal with uncertainty again, so, tell me if you don't feel the same way and we'll keep this strictly platonic."
Zayne, besides saying that he feels the same way about Ilkay, is honest about that being his first kiss. And they end up having the "I'm a virgin" conversation.
"That was my first time kissing."
The confession makes Ilkay pause, "Wait, really?" All it takes is Zayne's eyebrow twitching, "It's not a bad thing, it's just– you–" he looks down at his cup, ears and cheeks slowly turning red as he meets his eyes again, "You're a really good kisser, so I thought..." Zayne starts blushing then, avoiding his eyes, "You know, at the very least, you had a couple of moments where you kissed other people."
Zayne shakes his head, "It makes sense, I guess. You are a bit of a workaholic and you essentially sped ran medical school," he mutters with a soft smile, taking a sip before adding, "You're really good at everything, huh?" He teases, sighing softly after, "You- you'd be my first too. I- uh, I've never gone beyond the kisses I had at parties, no dates, no relationships, so... We're both going into it blind."
And then they start dating. Nothing changes much at first, they were already attentive with each other and hung out whenever they could, they just get to kiss and hold hands now. Ilkay still calls him "Doc," "Doccy-doc" and "Dr. Zayne" when he's being playful, but Zayne gets to hear the different ways Ilkay can say his name when he's being more intimate. Ilkay even starts teasing him by being like "zaynie waynie inzaynie" whenever he wants to get his attention, he pretends to hate it, but secretly enjoys it.
They end up having a dry humping moment on the couch during an impromptu make out session where Ilkay pulls away because he was about to cum embarrassingly fast, but he sees how blushy and disheveled Zayne is, and how is he supposed to stay away? So they cum embarrassingly fast together (as they should)
They have another conversation about their virginity 'cause Zayne wants to know about Ilkay's preferences regarding topping and bottoming, and because Ilkay is more flippant about it, he just goes "Oh I'm down for whatever. I don't really have a preference, but I could bottom first if you'd like?" And then he shrugs and goes, "besides, we don't have to jump straight into it, we could use our hands and mouths to figure it out and go up from there" and boy do they use their hands and mouths to figure it out before fully committing.
Now, the second scenario goes a bit similarly with a few tweaks here and there:
He gets the horrible news that Xavier died during a mission (he knows it's a lie, he had an inkling it would happen when Xavier started swinging between incredibly distant and incredibly clingy) months pass, he gets a shoulder injury that puts him out of commission for a bit. Nevaeh is there for him in the same way he was there for her when Caleb "died" she checks on him, never letting him stay alone in his apartment for too long if she can help it.
By the time he fully recovers, it's been a year.
He starts going back to work and avoids spending time in his apartment whenever he can help it. He's not as reckless with his missions, but he starts taking more, to the point where the cats– now two, because they'd adopted a second one– spend much more time over at Ilkay's dad's house than at the apartment, so Ilkay visits his dad more frequently too.
(The second one was named Eeno, also a ragdoll like Tichi. Even though both cats were incredibly affectionate with both of them, Tichi preferred his established routine with Ilkay, whereas Eeno preferred her established routine with Xavier. Eeno became even more affectionate with Ilkay once Xavier left, often accompanying Tichi in trying to soothe him)
It's during that rocky time that Nevaeh starts forcing him to take less missions so they can go out together.
Sylus comes along on some occasions, and Ilkay doesn't really mind, because then Nevaeh's attention isn't on him and he can mentally check out while being dragged along. She introduces him to Zayne during one of said outings, he makes a joke about not having to be the third wheel anymore, and it's like a couple of sun rays peeked through heavy clouds.
Zayne reminds him so much of Xavier in the beginning. Attentive, good memory, good at anything he puts his mind to. He doesn't try to fill in the silence, doesn't try to get Ilkay to smile or talk more or whatever, he's just a calm and steady presence.
But they are so very different.
A workaholic, a man that doesn't know how to rest and stay still. Ilkay finds himself reminding him to eat, cooking meals to share with him when he'd stopped doing it for about a year and a half and sharing lunch with him. (If forces him to stop and stay still too)
Xavier loved animals too, but Zayne isn't as adored by them as he was. They avoid him, and he can see how it affects Zayne even though he's subtle about it. The first time Zayne meets his cats, Tichi immediately befriends him and clings to him. Ilkay takes a picture and sends it to Neveah, both of them celebrate quietly as Zayne gets to cuddle a cat for potentially the first time of his life. Eeno takes a while to warm up to Zayne, preferring Ilkay over him, but once she does, Zayne isn't allowed to move from his spot on the couch once he sits because now Tichi and Eeno are reluctant to let him go.
Zayne inhales sweets like his life depends on it— they bicker about how Ilkay likes chocolates just as much, but has better self control than Zayne. He remembers what laughing feels like when he sees Zayne add spoonful upon spoonful upon spoonful of sugar into his tea, teasing him about toothaches and being a doctor that doesn't follow his own advice when it comes to sugar.
He doesn't touch alcohol, a complete lightweight— Zayne takes care of Ilkay while he's drunk, huffing fondly when all the younger man does is stare at him with puppy eyes and cling to him. Zayne never teases him about it, secretly enjoying the physical affection and how obedient Ilkay is in that state.
And then it happens: the kiss on the couch.
Same premise as the first scenario; watching something in Ilkay's apartment, the scene that has Ilkay laughing hard as hell and doubling over as he rewinds it. Zayne stares as Ilkay laughs himself into tears, smiling and laughing himself because Ilkay is so beautiful when he's laughing and "are those squeaks? He squeaks when he laughs?" Ilkay leans towards him when he dries his tears, sighing and holding his stomach, and when he turns he realizes Zayne is closer than he thought.
They lean into the kiss, and Ilkay has his second "oh" moment in his life. He can't help comparing Zayne to Xavier, but not in a "I'm still not over him" way.
His first kiss with Xavier felt like a win; cheers and celebration, happy adrenaline and a great moment you would never forget. Ilkay realized he had feelings for Xavier right when they were cheering and celebrating a win, with those same emotions and thoughts in the background. Almost fireworks, even.
His first kiss with Zayne feels... Calming, it's soothing, he can't help relaxing into it. It's warm and cozy, peaceful, it fills Ilkay with acceptance. It's true to the man he's grown fond of; accepting and calm. That's how he knows the true extent of what he feels for Zayne.
Ilkay doesn't try to deny the way he feels, much like he did when he realized what he felt for Xavier.
Eeno had been in Zayne's lap while they watched the tv, but ran off to cuddle with Tichi on a perch when they started laughing and jostled her too much. So Ilkay climbs over Zayne's lap to make the kiss more comfortable. When they break away for air, Ilkay says, "please tell me this isn't a one time thing, I don't think I can lie like that"
Of course it isn't, Zayne has been yearning for Ilkay since the first time they bickered over Zayne's weakness for sweets and Ilkay patted his arm in mock consolation while calling him "Flakes" affectionately.
Another intermission to add this scene that just came to mind:
"'Flakes'?" Zayne asks, a little while after that conversation had been over, walking beside Ilkay as they followed Sylus and Nevaeh.
"For when I feel too lazy to say 'snowflakes' fully," Ilkay explains, turning to look at him, "I can call you something else if it makes you uncomfortable, but you'll have to give me some time to think of a new nickname."
"No, it's alright; I don't mind."
Ilkay hummed and smiled, "Too late, Doc, I'm already brainstorming new ones."
Zayne stays over that night, sharing a bed without doing more than kissing. When morning comes, they kiss again, and when they fully talk about it, we have the whole "that was my first kiss ever and I'm a virgin" reveal from Zayne. Ilkay isn't surprised about Zayne being a virgin, he's like "Yeah, that tracks you're a workaholic" and "So... how does it feel to be naturally good at kissing?" and when Zayne asks if he's not put off by it, Ilkay answers with "Honestly? It kind of turns me on, I don't know why. But don't worry, we can take it slow, we don't have to jump straight into that"
In the first scenario, it was a mutual effort to try new things, both boys floundering a bit (naturally). On this one, it's mostly Ilkay giving Zayne the reigns to initiate when he felt comfortable and only taking the lead if it was absolutely necessary or if Zayne was reciprocating after Ilkay initiated. I had a scene about Ilkay giving Zayne a blowjob in the middle of his kitchen, and I'd go into detail but... hehe (it left my brain)
