(this is my opinion; you’re absolutely entitled to yours, but this is not the post for arguements; some of us are having a really hard time and need nothing but positivity, so please move along if you’re in a mood. thank you!)
First Time in Forever is a sadder song than The Next Right Thing.
I know they’re not really “comparable” because they’re about different things, but if we’re talking about “what will make you cry like a baby”, FTIF hits it for me. That desperation for freedom, love, and attention, after being isolated and neglected for your entire life hurts more than anything. And knowing that it was almost her last day, and knowing that she went on to being treated like shit by the person she wanted healthy attention from the most hurts. And it’s exactly what I’m dealing with right now.
FTIF hurts differently. Especially because it’s hidden behind a cheery, upbeat tune. It’s sad, man. Especially when you take away the music, and just listen to the vocals and lyrics. Babygirl needed a fucking bear hug.
TNRT was something 2016 me would’ve desperately needed after my favourite human was stolen from this world. It’s a song I’ll forever cherish, in memory of the version of myself that died alongside her.
I’m thankful for Anna’s strength in both of these songs. I’m thankful for the lyrics. I don’t mind anymore that she’s shadowed; she deserves to be truly appreciated, and not liked just because she’s the “popular” one. She’s a treasure.
