GOD, I JUST HAD THE MOST RIDICULOUS FUCKIN THOUGHT
So MK11 just got released, and the pissbaby gamer boys are all shitting their collective pants because the women are dressed properly (which is, apparently, literal “censorship”? Women wearing practical clothes is “censorship”??). It’s always a good sign when cishet men cry and say that they’re going to “boycott” something, but more than that, as someone who has had a kind of on-and-off relationship with MK since the franchise began back when I was a wee little babby Tanner, I want to say just how remarkable it is that MK has come so far and improved so much.
Back in the day, we had one (1) token girl in the form of Sonya Blade, who was later joined by other women who all dressed like pornstar dominatrices for some reason, and a bunch of supposedly Asian characters being played almost wholly exclusively by white actors, but look at MK now! There are lots of girls who talk and do things and wear sensible (but still stylish and aesthetically cool!) clothes, the Asian characters actually look Asian and have Asian VAs, and it’s still every bit as goofy and kitschy and ridiculous as it ever was.
Compare this to the likes of Detroit: Become Human, an allegedly “classy” game that tries so hard to grasp the concept of progressive politics but winds up completely butchering it and being grossly offensive in the process because it was directed by a soft-bellied French dipshit who desperately wants to be some kind of auteur but understands precisely nothing about racism or inequality at all, least of all that those matters aren’t his to speak on.
It is hilarious to me that fucking Mortal Kombat, which is just about the tackiest, nastiest, most low-brow game franchise imaginable, has managed to be more progressive than the vast majority of its contemporaries. The difference between MK11 and D:BH is that where D:BH wanted those tasty ~woke points~ for daring to say that racism is bad (whilst simultaneously being incredibly, incredibly racist at the same time), MK actually looked at the problems it had - its treatment of its female characters, the whitewashing and what have you - and quietly fixed them with no fanfare, because it was the right thing to do. Certain people are loudly and angrily complaining about them fixing some of those problems, even, and they’re sticking with it.
So, congratulations, video game industry! The shitty vulgarian gorefest franchise is doing better than you in pretty much every way imaginable! It’s still not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but good christs, the improvement! It’s making you all look bad. Make a fucking effort like Mortal Kombat made an effort.
