tbf there’s a time and a place for emotional responses to things (i have them all the time!), but that place is not in a critical review of a story’s overall presentation and merits. and you can still acknowledge the flaws of a game/story/movie etc., while having positive emotions about it! another good example of this, for me, is the last of us. i have tons of emotions about the last of us, and i was there with its emotional beats every step of the way -- but i don’t think it’s a great story, or really all that good of a game. my emotional response is still valid, but it doesn’t save the game from being underwhelming. life is strange is the same thing, but with no troy baker to distract me.

amell and cullen as quiet girlfriends in the tower. meet-cute a la bumping into each other, amell spilling her books across the hallway and cullen rushing to help her, stammering out apologies.

amell’s sigh is small, but oh, this one is nice. and when the new templar rubs her hand against the back of her neck, amell smiles.

‘you’re new,’ amell states.

‘yes, i - i transferred here not too long ago.’

amell could welcome her, she supposes, but what if she did not choose to be here? she settles on a small thank you, and the returning smile the templar gives her is shy and sweet.

‘i’m cullen, by the way,’ the templar introduces herself, wincing afterward.

probably remembering they aren’t supposed to talk to the mages, but - ‘i’m - ’

‘amell,’ jowan calls, down the hallway and probably around the corner. he reaches them in a hurry, practically skidding into amell. ‘come on, you have to see this. finn set fire to his - ’

‘jowan,’ amell sighs. ‘please tell me you put out the fire before you ran here.’

a shrug. ‘i’m pretty sure he figured it out by now.’

her mouth falls open in horror. she takes one step forward before turning to cullen, equally as worried. ‘nice meeting you,’ she says, before taking off down the hallway, jowan at her heels.

‘new one already?’ he moans unhappily.

‘she seems nice.’

finn’s pleas for help drown out jowan’s noise of disgust.

lady amell has lived in kirkwall all her life. though she is usually safely tucked away in hightown (mostly, but these days someone can take a night stroll and never make it back in the morning), she knows the faces of all those who live in kirkwall. most of her acquaintance comes from the salons she attends with her mother, others from the famous varric tethras himself.

he holds secrets, she knows, when his expression shutters off even as he jokes at his own expense. he even knew secrets about her family that her mother had never thought to tell her - anger and betrayal sewing lips shut, as they are won't to do. that had been a year ago, and she confronted her mother about it the day after she learned.

(they say her aunt ran away with an apostate - all very romantic. though gamlen amell lives in the space between fame and infamy, everyone knowing of him but wishing they didn’t. now, amell and her mother ensure he doesn’t starve, at least, but the company he keeps is too dangerous for her mother to ever offer him a place in their estate.)

the blight hits kirkwall like a wave against a cliff face, and when the tide recedes, it leaves the city with hundreds of refugees, hundreds of new faces trying to escape the destruction. though her mother cautions against it (some might have the blight, darling. what if you caught it?),  she makes her way to the docks. the ferryman - a boy, really, no more than a few years older than her - gives her an odd look when she states she wishes to go to the gallows.

‘no one goes to the gallows,’ he whispers, ore stalled in the water next to the little boat. ‘no one but mages and templars.’

‘and refugees, it seems. aren’t you the little bit curious? to have that information first hand instead of filtered down, ruined by rumor?’ she remembers seeing him when they were little, always telling stories that bordered on nonsense.

his shoulders slacken as he sighs, defeated. ‘fine. but we’re not staying long. i’m not getting yelled at by the guard and the templars for you.’

she gives him a grateful smile before turning her head toward the misty silhouette of the gallows in the distance. already she can see the number of ships gathered at the docks there.

the boy behind her groans. amell breathes in the salty air and braces herself for the sight.
