Is a fitbit worth it ‘cause i’ve wanted one for a while but am still not sure.
Well, it depends what you mean by "worth it", really.
Costwise, I've got a Zip, which is the cheapest one at £50. It's basic, and it's very tiny and cute, and bright green (though it comes in other colours too), and it obviously costs much less than £50 to make.
But on the other hand, I don't know of any other sites or companies that make something like this that syncs to a website and makes graphs and lets you compete with friends and stuff like that. I know that it really has increased my awareness of how much exercise I'm doing, and how much I'm eating compared to that. It's helped me to walk around more. It's also made things more fun, and I've heard elsewhere that gamifying your life is a good tactic for getting stuff done, to a sometimes creepy degree. For me, even though I've only had it for a bit over a week, it has been worth the £50.
But I can't speak for anyone else. I imagine that for people with eating disorders like bulimia it could be massively counter-productive, because there's a thing for counting calories (in and out) on the site and there's a type of bulimia that involves doing loads and loads of exercise to compensate for binge eating. I also think it's only really going to be helpful for people who're already motivated to lose weight or get fitter and are just looking for a tool to do so; it's not going to make you want to get better at stuff, you know?
I suspect that if someone bought one and decided they didn't like it after a week or two they could easily sell it on, especially if they kept the packaging. You wouldn't get full price, but then I think of it as hiring it from the universe for a little less than full buying price.
I don't know if that's helpful, but if you do decide to get one you should give me the URL of your profile so we can be buddies. :) I sell this to people by saying that you're pretty much always going to be above me in your personal league table!
