Why I Hate Windows 10 Today
I respect copyright law, I do. But when I make a copy of a TV episode for my own viewing and upload it to my computer, I expect it to remain there. I’ve lost so much data in the last month that it is making me physically ill because it is going into the Cloud and once there, it becomes irretrievable. No one seems to be able to figure this out. It’s like the Twilight Zone has settled over my machine and I’ve done more research on incremental backups and mirror images and restores and archiving protocols and fuck, where is my story? Where is the episode I just recorded? If I plug in a USB drive it is sucking the data right off it and putting it god knows where because it isn’t on the server upstairs, it isn’t in Dropbox or Google+ or Carbonite--it’s just gone. Along with the previous edition of the story I was writing because of default incremental backups.
And even as I type this, it wants to help me. This insidious tentacled beast wants to help me by dragging me further into its maw. Share your data. Come to the dark side. It’s all in the Cloud.
Even a floppy disk was more reliable.
