Agreed @fuckyeahhayleywilliams. If that movie was a straight couple no one would bat an eye over it. It would just be another Nicholas Sparks-esque movie. Don't get me wrong, CMBYN is not a bad film by any means but it's just...okay? It's a middle of the road movie with middle of the road performances which...whatever, it's fine. People latch on to shit for mysterious reasons and blow them out of proportion without explanation. That isn't what bothers me though. At all. What rubs me the wrong way is the tone deaf and hypocritical reaction people have been having to it.

Why hypocritical? The story is a 26 year old (...or was it 24. I don't remember. Either way, point stands) engaging in a relationship with a 17 year old. Knowing that it BAFFLES me to see the same blogs that a couple of months ago "cancelled" the lead from The Get Down because she was 20 and remained in a relationship with a 17 year old who I understand was the boyfriend she'd been in a relationship with since they were both minors because she was a "gross pedophile" calling this film a "beautiful love story". The same people I saw calling Spacey every insult in the book and who were celebrating the demise of his career because he went after 17 year olds when he was in his mid to late 20s keep reblogging gifsets of the movie. The people who don't want anyone over 18 to interact with anyone under 18 on this hellsite because it's "weird" and "creepy" and "adults have no business talking to minors" are THE SAME PEOPLE I'm seeing crying in its tags or on Twitter because Armie got "snubbed" and the Oscars "hate the gays". If Spacey was wrong and a predator (and don't twist my words...he is) then why do I see you calling anyone who doesn't support the EXACT SAME PREMISE THAT MADE SPACEY A SOCIAL PARIAH unfolding in a scenic Italian villa instead of a one bedroom in New York a "homophobe"? Like...what gives? Y'all gotta decide what you're going to be outraged about because y'all make absolutely no fucking sense. This selective enforcement of the rules is confusing and feels artificial.

Do you guys suspend your disbelief so easily because it was two white, conventionally attractive men being hunky on the screen? I have a feeling that if Oliver was a black man or they both were black or brown the reaction would've been much different. 🤷🏽‍♀️
