Im not sure why he thinks this is necessary - I have never weighted the tops this way; the only time I weight is when brining the cabbage to keep it submerged - but it does make for a damn funny post!
I did because the lids pop open if I don't, but I didn't want to completely seal the jars. I didn't want stuff to get in or the smell to invade the apartment.
