our interpretation of the yellow wallpaper was. it doesn’t matter if the narrator was actually ‘sick’ or ‘mentally ill’. the whole point was the way psychiatric patients (namely women) are abused and stripped of their autonomy and self expression. whether or not the narrator was ill from the beginning or driven to madness by isolation is literally irrelevant, it’s about the way a medical professional abused his wife.
