𝟭𝟵𝟴𝟬𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘆 California's Bay Area photographer Janey Delaney visited New York between 1984 and 1987, depicting the vibrance and character of the city's streetscape. After decades of being stored away, Delaney recently revisited and released the largely unseen NYC series. The Fulton Fish Market

This market was established in 1822; it was located on the East River just uptown from Fulton Street, near the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge. In 2005, the market was relocated to Hunts Point in the Bronx, leaving this spot after 183 years.

Some of these images were published in Peninsula Magazine, related to the luxury hotel chain. Six images by Richard Koenig; taken in March of 1993.

Manhattan's Fulton Fish Market in the 1980s ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Fulton Fish Market operated in the South Street Seaport for two centuries, at one point the largest seafood market in North America. In the 1980s photographer, Barbara Mensch bonded with the men who worked the docks and fish markets along the Seaport, documenting their culture. The #FultonFishMarket, which was controlled by the #mafia, was being threatened by the city, specifically future Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who sought indictments against many owners and operators of the seafood businesses in hopes of closing the market for good and constructing a shopping mall in its place. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mensch describes the state of the Seaport and her role in documenting the changing landscape, "although the waterfront was so rich in maritime history that it could be considered a national treasure, its importance as a seaport was greatly diminished after World War II. The last commercial link to the Port of New York was the Fulton Fish Market, which continued to operate on South Street. For many decades, the Fulton Fish Market was a no man’s land. Clandestine underworld operations, mysterious disappearances, and discoveries of bodies washed ashore along the East River became part of its mythic fabric. The newspapers were filled with stories about the Fulton Market, where crime was rampant and the mafia wielded absolute power." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mensch will be presenting her work tonight at The Skyscraper Museum, 39 Battery Place.
