Is it wrong that I consider Fear and Hunger a comfort game? It is horror that I don’t need a crazy amount of hand-eye coordination for and it has a fun art style AND Eldridge body horror.
Like, I’m just a little guy would likes to cuddle up with a blanket and a warm drink and watch little fictional characters have their sanity slowly stripped away as they become more attuned to the Elder Gods and the truly fucked up nature of their surroundings. Is that too much to ask?
You know, it is wild that all it took was Ragnavaldr using devour on Enki’s penids to get him to put down the book and join the party already. Now that’s good puzzle solving!
I think the things that makes funger effectively horrifying are generally similar to what makes Alien an effectively horrifying movie. The main difference is that instead of playing Sigorney Fucking Weaver, you get ginger Ringo Star.
Ok so I was thinking about the soul types and how each character in funger embodies their soul’s identity. In the first game, I think a point can be made that each character is the OPPOSITE of their soul’s identity type!
Spoilers below the for multiple endings in the first game and some minor details in the second.
Just to start, this is my theory of what the “canon” ending is.
1. Darce finds Legard alive and brings him to the Golden Throne. She either joins him as a human or becomes a New God as well.
2. Enki’s S-ending is canon and he refuses God-hood to obtain True Enlightenment™️.
3. Cahara brings the Girl down through the Gauntlet where she becomes the God of Fear and Hunger and he dies trying to help her.
4. Ragnavaldr’s S-ending is canon, but instead of Legard being dead, he simply can’t find him. This leads him to teaming up with Moonless and vowing to kill all with a dark soul.
Darce: This one is fairly straightforward since despite being a dominating soul, her main priorities are related to Legard and realizing his goals. I feel like this logic is further explained in how I personally interpret the “canon” ending. It also shows in game when you first meet her and she is being beaten by the cave dwellers. Darce, I think would be better suited with the Tormented Soul Type, simply because she repeatedly puts herself in situations where she is manipulated, exploited or just straight up brutalized. She has no sense of self preservation and suffers for it.
Cahara: This might seem like a stretch, but I feel like he has almost “grown-out” of Endless soul status. Growing up fighting for his life on the streets would make him yearn for better, but by the time we meet him, he is tired of that and is ready to finally settle. The man has a whole-ass pregnant wife at home and based on his S-ending, he was more than fine with leaving the dungeon without going through the extra nonsense. Granted, I know a lot of people agree with me that he is the one to bring the Girl down to become the God of Fear and Hunger. However, since he didn’t know that doing this would lead to her transformation, I think it is more likely that he does it thinking it is in her best interest or in hopes that someone would do the same for his own child (or maybe even wishing someone had looked after him when he was young). The Soul Type I think resonates with these actions would be the Enlightened Soul since upon meeting Celeste he has been “enlightened” to what his future could be instead of living in the constant state of survival and loneliness that he has his entire life.
Enki: This one is fairly complicated since, based on his S-ending, he refuses Godhood and becoming the embodiment of Enlightenment. However, this causes him to reach True Enlightenment™️. The very convoluted way I have come to think of it is that the difference lies in his vanity. Enki is a self-righteous person who is extremely opinionated. Despite a mostly levelheaded voice in his writing, the Skin-Bibles in Termina show definite emotional reactions to his findings and are full of snarky quips. If he was True Enlightenment™️, I would assume based on how it is portrayed in other forms of media, that he wouldn’t have maintained that very human aspect of himself. To me, that shows that he didn’t necessarily become enlightened, but used his natural intelligence and survival instinct to understand his studies more deeply without suffering the fate of his New God form. The Soul Type that makes the most sense to me considering this would be the Endless Soul due to his endless search of knowledge which he literally becomes immortal to accomplish because otherwise he wouldn’t be able to even scratch the surface.
Ragnavaldr: I will admit that this is probably the weakest of the explanations. However, despite the horrors that brought him there, he is objectively one of the more successful characters in the game. Based on information from his S-ending and Termina, he accomplished his goals of destroying all the dark souls in the dungeon and later got to have a family again (assuming August is truly a direct descendant). Considering all of this, much like Cahara, I think that Ragnavaldr actually “defeated” his soul’s implicated nature rather than letting it be the end of him. The Dominating Soul Type makes sense because he is violently tearing through the world in an act of revenge. He is dominating the evil that took his loved ones away from him.
