Schizophyllum commune aka the Splitgill mushroom is a wood decaying fungus capable of degrading polyurethane, a common household material found in everything from foam sealant, shoe soles, and furniture such as cushions and mattresses.

Not only does it have the ability to turn polyurethane into a clean, organic matter, but its mycelium has also been found to make sustainable substitutes for plastic packaging.

Story in caption. Week 06 - Bleeding tooth fungus (#funguary week 1)

You will not believe what happened to me! I actually was on my way to the realm of fairies. But while crossing a massive mountain range, I got off the track and, by chance, discovered a strange valley. Humid and misty, it is home to the strangest creatures I ever came across. The dwellers of this mysterious valley are unlike any myconids I have met before! One of the first myconids I encountered upon entering this strange world appeared like a conifer tree covered in cream and decorated with strawberry jam. The fungus folk had awakened conifers as means to get around their valley. They also had a shrewd mind for business. Apparently, their body produced the most potent anticoagulant. Vampires from all over Almaos came to this hidden valley for this substance. Aptly named ‘bleeding tooth’, it facilitates easier feeding for the elderly vampires. The myconids made a fortune bartering with the vampires, although I do not know what they might do with the gold in this remote realm of myconoids.
