5 Minutes with...FUNK D’VOID
Today, we continue with our series of ‘5 Minutes with...’ welcoming Soma regular and main man behind the masterpiece ‘Diabla’, Mr FUNK D’VOID. He’ll be appearing at Sunday’s Pressure Closing Party at SWG3 with SLAM, Adam Beyer, Robert Hood and many more.
What is your emergency record – the one you always carry, which you can always rely on?
Motorbass - Visine, never fails…a simple groove and a bassline, the perfect transitional record. Absolutely timeless.
What are your top 3 clubs in the world and why?
Moog in Barcelona - It’s always packed and has the best staff - they’re more like family now…it’s been part of my diary for almost 20 years... plus it’s only down the road! Macarena, Barcelona - They put up with me every month, so for that deserve a medal..tiny club with a big heart. Sektor 909, Macedonia, because they treat you so well and the club is the perfect size - and they KNOW good music.
What was your worst and your best ever DJ experience?
Some crazy rave in the mid-west of USA in the 90s, it was horrible. First of all we were in the middle of a typhoon and was staying in a David Lynchian motel with plastic sheets and a timer for the bed to vibrate, every news channel had a weather warning on - we eventually show up and there were rednecks on acid surrounding a huge bonfire, which some crazy jumped into and got burned horrifically. The sound system packed in but they continued the party with only the monitors, so I refused to play after some dude threw a beer can at my head (I was like, fuck this!!) - to top it all off they refused to pay and I was chased off-site by scary-looking biker dudes with alsatians on strings.
The best experience I suppose was when I played Diabla at the 2001 Detroit Electronic Music Festival…it was one of the first times playing it out and the whole crowd were chanting “Detroit, Detroit” during the track. I felt something profound that day, to be playing in the crucible of techno and to be received so well by the locals.
What’s on your rider and why? Nothing special, just beer, JD & coke (the liquid-kind).
Looking forward to welcome Funk D’Void on Sunday at SWG3!
