9th - 15th September - A gig, a trip to the theatre, and a mooch around the docklands on a glorious day.
Wow, I am impressing myself with my new found consistency. Another week has passed and another blog entry!
This week was pretty awesome and pretty productive. The majority of our time has been spent preparing ourselves for the imminent arrival of Kirstie's mum, step-dad and her Gramp. I have assembled a 2nd hand Ikea bed which was previously in bits with just a swiss army knife and no instructions. We have purchased extra pillows to ensure that Kirstie's gramp has his three pillow request fulfilled, we've purchased custard creams for her mum, an extra chair so we can all sit around the table, coffee for Martin, and I need to purchase ear plugs for all of them to ensure they are not kept awake by the douchebags that seem to think we want to hear their drunken singing or domestics right outside our flat on a Saturday night. We're pretty much all set, and looking forward to all the fun things we are doing in the next two weeks.
Aside from these preparatory activities we've been pretty busy with fun and random stuff as well. Our attempt to do something completely different every week is going well.
On Monday night I had band practice as per usual. Alan had a hardcore migraine and left early, so Prairie and I just jammed out random stuff. It was cool being completely free to do absolutely whatever came to mind. It has been a while since I was able to just play rather than playing pre-written songs (either to prepare for recording or for shows). However next week will be business as usual so we can get closer to our goal of playing some shows in Melbourne.
On Tuesday I met up with Jordan to watch a girl/band called Megan Washington. She was really cool both in a genuinely good act to watch sense, but cool as in she was very much representative of the Melbourne hipster 'scene'. Check her out here:

There were some real cool kids at the show (and me). She is definitely someone I'll be keeping an eye out for. Really awesome stuff.
On Thursday we hit the Elephant and Wheelbarrow pub quiz again. We were joined by two of Elisa's friends (Ben and Kent), and with them our scores improved. We came a very close 4th (1st, 2nd & 3rd were tied). Hopefully after a few more weeks we can actually win!
Friday rolled around pretty quick. The day at work mainly consisted of attending a 'morning tea', eating cake, painting stuff and doing a quiz in aid of the RUOK day, which is a mental health awareness day. This was followed by a delightful pub lunch. Not the hardest day at work by any stretch of the imagination!
Soon enough it was Saturday, I got up and headed out for a 5km run. I did it in just over 25 minutes, so I improved on my last time. This whole new fitness regime is obviously paying off!
Later on, and armed with a hefty shopping/to do list we headed into St Kilda. The weather was delightful and so we thought we'd walk along the beach to the supermarket. It was nice to be reminded of how amazing St Kilda is by taking in the beach atmosphere. The weather has been mostly crappy in recent weeks, so it was a nice change. Feeling a bit hungry we thought we'd grab some lunch. We stumbled across a newly opened place called zombie burger. It was pretty delicious. I had a 'zombie pig', which was PORK. (mmmmm pork). There was a zombie dragging itself around St Kilda promoting the new place, and it was pretty well done! After lunch we explored the 'Veg Out' garden. It is a community allotment with a stage in the middle, a kitchen, a craft room, a chicken coop, and a monthly market for gardeners to sell their produce. There are lots of cool things around the place too like little arty things and a dolls house filled with toy zoo animals. All a bit odd, but pretty cool!
Later on we headed in to the city for a night at the theatre. Lara (our German friend), went to see a show earlier in the week called 'Bang, Crash Tap' and highly recommended it to us. It was basically two pretty gymnastic tap dancers, a drummer and an amazing beat boxer. They were all jamming together and also doing individual performances. The beat boxer was absolutely incredible and very funny, the tap dancers were pretty clever too. The drummer was kinda cool, but I wasn't that impressed to be fair. It was a bit like 'Stomp' but perhaps a bit more contemporary. They were tap dancing with flippers and flip flops. It was something a bit different and definitely worth going to.
On Sunday we said we would visit Lara at her work and have breakfast there. She is working in a cafe in the docklands area. We enjoyed a great egg and bacon muffin and I had a cup of English tea (yes yes I know). After making Lara skive for a bit we headed off along the water's edge to the shopping area. It was an area we hadn't really explored properly and we were pleasantly surprised by how nice it is. There was weird art all over the place (a cow in a tree?), military boats, very swanky looking boats and lots of restaurants etc. It was pretty busy, again because the weather was nice, and the shopping mall there is pretty cheap. We walked around a bit, Kirstie attempted some shopping and gave up. At this point we headed back into the Central Business District, did some shopping for Kirstie's mum, step-dad and Gramp and then headed back to the flat.
A pretty cool week in Melbourne. Cannot wait for the next few weeks.
