But sometimes it's too dark to see the light / It shines back to who we are
Silence surrounds the spaces around them, those spaces small enough to be nearly nonexistent, distances easy for the tendrils of their souls to cross in their need to reach out. It's a silence that's comforting, intimate, a well-known thing that covers them in a veil of familiarity.
He picks up the folded cloth, squeezes the water out of it, rivulets and droplets of red and paler shades swimming lazily in circles. He smiles, hums, brings up his hand to caress the soft skin of a cheek, the one that's not bruised, while the other hand carefully wipes away the dust and the dirt from the cut around an eyebrow, from the scrape covering the expanse of a cheekbone. The softest sigh pushes through thin lips, the fluttering of eyelashes and the way the head leans into his touch, it all makes the thousands of knots in his chest unwind one by one.
"I was worried," he says, slowly, softly, and this close there is nothing to deprive him from the clarity of the sight - of blue eyes focusing on his, of shimmers and stars in a pool of surprising depths, of the mirth and life resting within.
"Thank you," is the reply, perfect as always, as a hand reaches out to gingerly touch him, fingertips tenderly tracing the bridge of his nose, the scar across it, the line of his eyebrow, the sharpness of his jawline. A finger stops by the corner of his lips, rests there, as if that place is its home. It might as well be. Any part of his body is home to any part of him.
"No," he breathes out, finishes cleaning the pretty face he's come to adore so much, places down the cloth and moves that last space closer, brings his lips to the patch of skin between eyebrows. "Thank you for coming back to me."
"Shiro," the smile is sweet and delicate, the arms resting on his shoulders have the sureness of someone arriving to the place they belong. "You dork. I'm always gonna come back to you."
"I know," he lets himself lean down a bit, lets their lips brush for an instant, "I know, Lance. I still worry. You know that. You know I worry."
"I love you, you silly man. I promise I'll be careful from now on. So I can keep coming back. Wouldn't dream of leaving you alone."
He laughs, a trembling sound, a fragile balance. Can they really promise anything like that? Either of them? Is it possible?
"Thank you," he whispers, looks at Lance in the eyes, tips of their noses touching.
What truly matters is the principle of the thing.
