Funny patches are a natural evolution of custom embroidered patches themselves. Custom embroidery on a mass-production scale is a relatively recent development that makes funny patches attainable and affordable.

For much of recorded history, embroidery was a painstaking process done by hand. Because it took so much time and effort, embroidered tapestries were both rare and expensive. They were most often owned by royalty and other wealthy individuals.

That changed in the mid-1800s, with the invention of the mechanical embroidery loom. Embroidery could now be created much more quickly by machine, and much more economically.
