On this day four years ago (28 July 2022) in Wood Green, a female British Shorthair cat went into labour and gave birth to a litter of kittens (perhaps on an old towel or some newspaper. I can’t verify; I wasn’t present). One of her wriggling, mewling offspring was our own Eartha Kitten! Yes, That Bad Eartha (aka Eartha Angel, aka Eartha Quake) turns four years-old today! (We brought our temperamental and intense fur princess home on 8 October 2022). I can barely remember what life was like “pre-Eartha” as her moods, whims, demands and routines dominate my existence now (my life is now cleanly divided BE (Before Eartha) and AE (After Eartha)). All these years later, I’m still mesmerised daily at how beautiful she is. I Googled the characteristics of Eartha’s zodiac sign and every word rings true: “Leo cats (born 23 July to 22 August) are the confident, dramatic and charismatic rulers of the household. They act like royalty, love being the centre of attention and expect you to treat your home as their kingdom. They truly believe they own the house and everything in it.” Pictured: Her Highness in May 2026, lolling ecstatically in her favourite chair. (Strictly speaking, it’s Pal’s chair but she claims it every chance she gets).

I can’t verify; I wasn’t present). One of her squirming, mewling offspring was our own Eartha Kitten! Yes, That Bad Eartha turns three years-old today! (We brought our temperamental and intense fur princess home on 8 October 2022). I can barely remember what life was like “pre-Eartha” as her moods, whims, demands and routines dominate my existence now (my life is now cleanly divided BE (Before Eartha) and AE (After Eartha)). All these years later, I’m still agog at how beautiful she is. (As a baby, her eyes were sapphire blue. Now they are orange-y gold. Apparently, the official term for them is “pineapple eyes”). Anyway, here’s Her Highness brazenly luxuriating in Pal’s chair in April 2025. (The minute he vacates it, Eartha claims it). If you look closely, you’ll see Eartha is sticking out her tongue (which is so weird, as she normally never does that). Eartha appears to be inviting you to tickle her stomach here - but proceed with caution!

Confrontational "action shot" of our wildly-indulged fur princess Eartha Kitten taken yesterday. This was her fourth Christmas (she was born in July 2022). Can you see the "Christmas wonder" in That Bad Eartha's eyes? She will miss hiding and playing in the pink artificial tree when we take it down.

On this night three years ago (8 October 2022), my life changed irrevocably: Pal brought home our British blue shorthair “fur princess” Eartha Kitten! My life is separated “pre-Eartha” and “post-Eartha” – although at this point it’s difficult to remember life BEFORE the naughty, willful and intense Eartha at all. She has fully taken over the flat and graciously permits us to share it with her. Her whims, mood swings and routines dominate. Things she loves: Dreamies (treats which are seemingly crystal meth for cats – but only the ones in orange packaging). Net curtains. Staring out the bedroom window in deep contemplation. Lounging in her cat tree. Playing rough (Eartha seethes with aggression, violence and a profound primal hunting instinct; my hands, arms and legs are permanently covered in scratches from when she feels “playful”). And the tissue paper-lined cardboard box a Christmas gift came in in 2023 Eartha immediately adopted as a bed (pictured). She’s the opposite of a “people pleaser” and affection is strictly on her terms (her “love language”: when she wants tickles, Eartha flops on her side and displays her tummy). I’m entranced by the refined, delicate way she sips water or chomps little mouthfuls of cat food. She’s incredibly communicative (her meows are usually a variation of “I want!” or “Play with me!”).
