Have you ever heard about Autochorissexuality? I just found it and it is actually so nice to read about it, because it just fits me as an ace. I thought i could tell you and and you could share it so other ace's get to see it. I have not heard of this one before, but that's interesting!!

There *is* one coming up soon-adjacent (not tomorrow for sure but I believe in the next 2-3 days) that sounds similar, I wonder if it is an alternate name- Libidus Asexual (an asexual person who still feels sexual urges but self satisfies those through masturbation)?

I will definitely do more research into it later today when I am at a real computer. I have no problem extending TPIJ flags if people bring more info like this!!!

jpegs demonstrate the new cultural and economic logic of post-industrial societies in which, as Manovich points out, new media cultural objects are not fixed but can exist in different versions, and this quality enables ‘production on demand’, because the consumer can determine the exact features of the commodity: ‘In industrial mass society everyone was supposed to enjoy the same goods  …  . In a post-industrial society, every citizen can construct her own custom lifestyle and “select” her ideology from a large (but not infinite) number of choices  …  . The logic of new media technology reflects this new social logic’. In practice, that means that media users are given options to modify programmes, interface features, and file size, file type, type of compression used, file format, and so on. Yet, what enables ‘variability’ and ‘mutability’, programmability and quantification, is also what delimits it, because ‘choices’ are always pre-programmed in advance by designers, programmers, media corporations, advertisers, etc. And this is precisely what is demonstrated in jpegs because individual changes are possible but only within the realm of possibilities and choices predetermined in advance by a standards committee.

The concept of ‘the sublime’ historically dates back to Burke’s 1757 Philosophical Enquiry, if not even earlier in time, and to Kant’s discussion on the term, illustrated in the first part of his Critique of Judgment, 1790. 

Nonetheless, arguments on such ideology are still prevalent in the modern-day. American artist Barnet Newman, in 1948, wrote a passage titled ‘The Sublime is Now’. The link above connects to Julian Bell’s online article, where the painter approaches the contemporary revisitation of ‘the sublime’ from a critical perspective. Bell adopts the artist’s viewpoint, rather than choosing a philosophical outlook.

Gender, Surrealism

In Teemus lecture he mentioned how there were many women in the art movement of surrealism and for the time it will have been a lot harder for women to progress and get recognised in the male dominated field of art. Neil in a previous lectures has also discussed the work of Lee Miller, a key female figure amongst the surrealists whom collaborated with many other artists of the time.

I am interested in the gender roles within the surrealist movement, the work produced by women and the work of women, for example Man Ray and his use of the female body, not just his fashion photography, but in experimental darkroom work which has been one of the primary influences for my practical work this semester.

Miros group - psychoanalysis as methodology

Miros group presentation on a psychoanalytical way of analysis images really stood out for me, the aspects I found most interesting were the examples of William Klein and artists from the surrealism.

Their group explained that psychoanalysis unlocked the reason why an image is taken, I thought this was a really clear and simple way of putting what I’d always thought to be a daunting topic to approach. The example of William Klein was related to Freudian theories around trauma, Klein went back to his home town to photograph it and expose it for how he saw it. He was expressing his psyche, showing how he saw the world he grow up in. Revisiting his home town and exploring his psyche also acted as a meditative process, much like the work of Jo spence mentioned in a previous blog post. Both examples are using photography to cope and make sense of whats going on in their brains.  

The example of artists from surrealism explained Freuds theory on the different levels of consciousness and that your dream state is unlocking primal unconsciousness. Surrealists use of automatic writing, for example was used to demonstrate the unconscious working.

Advanced Research Methods - Seminar Presentation Review

For my seminar presentation I decided to speak in a group about Urban Theory and how the Urban Environment has developed over the years. My particular part of the presentation involved me talking about the before and afters of three different locations which were the Olympic Park, Dubai and The Shard. These developments were a result of events and money. The Olympic Park, based in Stratford, was created for the Olympics in 2012 which involved the whole area undergoing a massive overhaul which changed the area from a scrapyard to a huge complex full of many stadiums and playgrounds. I also included an image of a Bird’s Eye View of a golf course in Dubai between the 1980s and today. The images differ because of the landscape that has changed in this city as a result of the oil money that has affected the United Arab Emirates. The city was a simple desert with the golf course in it which then became flooded with skyscrapers as a result of the development. Finally, I spoke about the development of the Shard between 2010 and 2012 which included images of the building as it was slowly going up from the ground to over 1,000 feet high making it the second tallest free-standing building in the United Kingdom. I chose to speak about this because the many images I selected demonstrating the difference between the construction of this building demonstrate how London is constantly developing.

Overall, I felt that my part of the presentation could have been improved based on how I spoke and left many pauses in between my speaking which lost the flow of the context and slowed it down. Another flaw that was pointed out was we only used images researched from the internet and not from any projects by photographers which held us back on the content and how to explain Urban Theory in different detail with more context.

‘ARM’ Conclusion Notes - 11/12/19

What an engaging and interesting module it has been. Not only has there been interesting topics raised throughout on the approach to analysing and taking images, but we also had two exhibition visits. 

I think what I have found unbelievably useful is discussing ideas in tackling images and their meanings. The presentations we did were a really good learning curve, particularly as I chose a subject that I didn't have a great deal of knowledge towards in regards to photography. Psychoanalysis has opened up all kinds of interesting ideas and thoughts that I will be taking with me into the future. What has also been great is evolving the approach towards thinking and the philosophical undercurrent that flows throughout photography generally. In all the modules we have been attending, there is a strong sense of finding what your practice is and what kind of photographer you are, and this module has helped to press upon us a lot of questions that maybe we had never thought about, or if we had, offered us new perspectives and new bodies of work.

This whole module only solidified, in my head, the idea that everything is connected, no matter how distant one thing may seem from another. As my own ideas develop and my practice begins to take shape and perspectives, this connectedness has been really important and is now fundamental in how I look at the world and how I begin to develop ideas and opinions.

Also, as a final note, the blog questions have been interesting to answer. Usually I would have tried to reflect on each session in a similar way to how the questions ask us to, but it was nice to have some guidance in what specifically to respond to. Its obvious, but its really important (to me) to write ideas, thoughts, and reflections on sessions to get the most out of them but also to have a record and keep alive memories of ideas that are raised. As I mentioned, the whole course this term feels designed to get a much deeper understanding of what it is you think about things and how that informs your practice and this was an important part of that.
