[Reflection] 3D Modelling & Projection

My friends saw my 3D model, and they thought it was cute and in line with the style of previous projects I had done.

After watching the video which combines model and projection animation I recorded, my friend commented that it is a lovely and romantic small hanging sculpture, which is more ornamental than interactive. This is the same purpose as my original design.

Hui, one of my friends, pointed out that the animation’s painting could be more detailed, but I think it is already with a high degree complication. Maybe she means that I can use more frames to complete the animation effect and reduce the simple movement.

In general, the majority of the audience are satisfied and love this work. They can feel the theme of the dream I want to express, and think it is full of childlike interest, which is enough.

Personal gains

During my undergraduate study, I seldom made installation art combining sculpture and projection, so when I started my postgraduate study, I planned to try such a project at least once this year.

In the first few weeks of study, I was exposed to the technology of 3D printing for the first time, which gave me a really novel feeling. I knew about this technology when I was an undergraduate, but I didn't really create and practice it myself. It was not until master that I realized for the first time that the model I designed had become real and was held in my hand.

In the process of production, I further improved my modelling skills. I have designed simple modelling in the past, so as to avoid showing my shortcomings in this aspect. But in this practice, I hope to do the topic I like, so I try my best to complete the design I expected, which brings me a strong sense of satisfaction.

In addition, since the production time runs through the Christmas holiday, I have to arrange my own schedule reasonably, which has exercised my time management ability.

It was also the first time for me to try to borrow the equipment in the loan store, which helped me a lot. I also consider trying to make full use of the resources provided by the school in the later practice.

I showed my work to my classmates and friends, and they found that the postures of my characters became less. They expressed a little pity for this because the fact is that more postures could bring more changes and interests to the audience, which I do not deny.

What I have gained the most is that the decisions I made in the process of production, this have taught me how to shape my own works in a better way to meet the needs of users.

For example, when determining the shape of the dialogue box, I initially designed the shape like a bubble, and in the initial design draft, I also added a box showing the actions in the middle of the character. I showed my design draft to my friend Rena, she thought that this box displaying actions were not necessary because people could infer what the characters were doing directly from the pictures. The position of this box also made the who interface seem too messy. She also said that the dialogue box had better be square so that I could edit it more easily. I changed these as she suggested, and I thought it would be more intuitive to use colour to distinguish the dialogue between two characters.

I really appreciate her advice, which is of great help to me.

This made me realize that as a creative artist, it is necessary to communicate with my audience on ideas. Although my work was not complete at that time, it was only a first draft. Dialogue with my audience is a very direct way to understand the needs of users. Only in this way can I understand the problems in the design of works that I can't think of.

Further exploration of the new software Isadora has also benefited me a lot. Learning a new piece of software means that I have one more option to build projects in the future.

In addition, my research in story generators has been of great help to me in the 2D character design. I like this field very much, and the design style of comics and related game works I have researched is very touching to me. In particular, the research of ‘JoJo's Bizarre Adventure’, the author Hirohiko Araki designed fashionable costumes for the characters that conform to their characteristics, which made me feel a lot.

[Production] Story Generator

After looking at all the features of Isadora, one of the most important features I've found is that you can't add "IF" conditions like you can with JavaScript. This limitation forced me to change the number of postures I planned for the character.

At first, I planned to use three postures for each character, but since I could not use Isadora to choose postures and corresponding clothing and skin colour, I reduced it to one posture for each character. That's a pity.

Following by the interface design I made before, I started drawing all the illustrations.

First of all, I draw different colours, items, top clothes, bottom clothes and facial expressions of the two characters. In the process of drawing these, I searched the keywords of "cartoon", "costume" and “items” on Pinterest to find inspiration. After all, it is impractical to draw with imagination alone.

Then I imported all the pictures related to the characters into Isadora. Based on the structure of the previous session7 project, I made a program to implement a random selection and set the input value. I used a general trigger to control all random programs.

I found the two characters too close together, so I moved them away a bit. This means I need to zoom in on the background image to fit the whole project. So I expanded the background size from 2400X1668 pixels to 3000X1668 pixels.

I searched for "cartoon" and "background" in Google images to find some images to reference. Finally, I decided to draw five backgrounds: the universe, ocean, valley, Halloween night and desert. I drew them on the iPad and imported them into the program in Isadora.

Then I collected the names of boys and girls on one naming website. In addition to the names given on the website, I also added some names which I knew from other countries, such as Lihua and Matsuko. In addition, some punctuations and random codes are added as one of the options of the name, which adds more interest to the program.

I found a web page that provides interesting lines, many of which I think can be used in this project. This web page is very useful because if I just think of the lines by myself, my imagination is limited. At this time, it is very important to do relevant research. I also added some daily conversations, such as "would you like to have dinner with me? "You're right, I agree." I created these little dialogues in photoshop and added them to Isadora. I used different colour words to distinguish the two characters, which made the audience more intuitive to understand what I wanted to express.
