made the mistake of opening the comments on an ig reel of this black girl athlete doing a grwm, and her hair wasn't like. super straight and polished-looking and even 'messy.' other bw in the comments were giving helpful suggestions but others were saying things like 'ohhh i bet ur mom is white huh 😒' and other comments like that. i do understand where both types of commenters r coming from, but i do feel like there is a pressure both within and outside the black community to always have '''''presentable'''''' looks, especially our hair. and i often wonder if that mindset is holding us black women back to a certain extent. in the sense that we are not immune to the patriarchical trappings of beauty culture, and so we see another woman who isn't '''''presentable'''''' as Not Like Us™ and therefore inherently suspect or less-than somehow . obviously im not saying we should look Snatched all the time OR that we should Not Care about how we look ever. it's just like.....sometimes the clothes and hairstyle or lack thereof that you like to wear, choose to wear on a given day, aren't always the '''''presentable'''''' ones . not everyone wants to have laid edges or threaded brows or an expensive lacefront all the time, or even some of the time . i certainly don't lol. black womyn deserve to exist in our natural states too . it's not always That Serious .

just saw the Black in marine science acc put up a post of their founder ‘disrupting sustainability narratives’ and how she’s doing it: she’s a fat dark skin Black woman with 4c hair, and other attributes she has that also break the mould of ‘’’traditional’’’ marine scientists. bizarrely, the op included in that list, ‘long acrylic nails.’ huh????

i just think that choosing sex solidarity with other women doesn’t mean that doing so negates ur solidarity with other poc, that u are then ‘turning ur back’ on ur race solidarity . they’re not mutually exclusive . and furthermore just because a wws whiteness insulates her from a lot of the harsher prejudices that we woc experience doesn’t mean that she doesn’t experience misogyny and sexism simply for being Born Female. ww r still women and sexism and misogyny still hurt them like they hurt us. it still is very much an achievement to b a Woman In Stem even if ur white, because STEM is very much a male-dominated sector.

the scientist in question from my last post got her marine science phd in the 60s. sexism was alive and well then even more than it is today. women like phyllis schlafly and anita bryant were loudly and aggressively selling out their own sex by decrying and derailing feminism and women’s liberation, trying to stop women from having autonomy, 24 sev. and ppl rallied behind them in the hundreds. getting an advanced science degree was a massive feat for any woman then, regardless of their skin colour. so yea, she does get to b proud of her Science Degree From The 60s, because that was a big deal then and it still is today. her simply being proud of that achievement on its own doesn’t directly dunk on Black women just on principle .

do ww get off easier than we do because of their skin colour? of course. but that doesn’t mean that white Women In Stem never experience hardship because it’s only tied to their gender and not their gender and race like it is for us.

something that has always bothered me is this one interaction i had with my pi at the marine bio lab i worked at two years ago. i said i really wanted to get to know this female scientist (⚪️) who also worked there and my pi, also a Black woman, basically was like ‘yea good luck with that haha it’s your funeral!’ not her exact words but that was the vibe of what she said . and i was like Why and she was like ‘that woman’s mean as hell’ and i was like ‘man im sorry to hear that, what do u mean by that?’ and she was like ‘she always makes SUCH a big deal about being a woman in stem like get real some of us r actually struggling 🙄 shes always going on and on about how hard she had it 🙄’ and that’s always rubbed me the wrong way .

i understand where she was coming from because my mentor was a nontraditional student and on top of being a Black woman put herself thru college and is putting herself thru her advanced marine biology degree rn. but that doesn’t mean that….its somehow Not a point of pride to be a Woman In STEM. it Is in fact a point of pride to b the only woman on a r/v full of men in the 60s when the woman in question finished her phd . because. sexism and misogyny r alive and well in science and especially then . so .
