“Hang on, I got you.”
It was one of the dangers of working those evacuation missions. While the Avengers rescued civilians from the more dangerous and impossible situations and fought off the big bads, SHIELD got the area’s population to safety. They held off the baddies as long as they could. They bought Earth’s Mightiest Heroes a bit more time. Sterling had just done a scan of the sector he had been assigned, found no civilians left to evacuate, and had called it in as clear when he felt himself tumbling along the rubble and debris of a partially destroyed building.
Luckily for him, his finger was still on his comms when he was hit, broadcasting his groan of pain before his radio silence. He must have been knocked out a moment. Couldn’t have been that long. He wobbled as he tried to make it to his feet but as Sterling went to fall back to the ground he felt a shoulder wedge itself under his arm and a figure beside him began to support his weight.
“Sir?” Sterling groaned, disoriented.
What had hit him? Where had it come from? How bad off was he? His head was spinning too much to process just yet.
