sai should be an expert at that.

it's part of the mandatory training, you know. in ROOT, you have no names, no proper identity. this can work well, because a lot of time, masks aside, ROOT shinobis are deployed to take up a personality that isn't theirs. this is so they could infiltrate, they could extract when necessary, and once it's over, they are able to kill without detection. or rather, if there is a need for detection at all — a framing, one would typically say — it will be done with the finest form of mimicry. the suspicion could not be disputed thereafter.

sai himself has always been put on a more straightforward mission, more often than not a kill-order rather than any long-term assignment that may have a need of him exercising a different persona. this is because he's been told that, for as he is ruthless and obedient, sai lacks the proper understanding one needs to be socially believable. sai has never quite been disappointed before, though he thinks he feels that a little, when he knows he'll be passed over when longer missions with a chance of travelling does not end up in his roster.

to this other man now, he tilts his head to one side. he clarifies:

❛⠀well, then how else are people supposed to know each other ? ❜ ayane isn't very bright. she'd known this since she was a child. compared to her siblings or any other kids her age, academic studies don't tend to stick well for her. it's a miracle she'd taken to working in the bakery or any kitchen at all. and as for social cues ... well, she'd like to think she's fairly friendly, although even that can seem ... uncool, huh ? people are often stoic and kept so strictly to themselves, and that's okay !

she just isn't one of those people, and ayane hopes other people are okay with that, as well.

she takes the freshly-baked buns out of the oven then, grinning openly at the results. she wasn't sure what to expect when she'd taken the obscure job here, but — as long as the equipments are maintained enough, ayane's looking forward to a new life without the pestering of her parents and siblings. she turns to the student again, tilting her head to one side, and smiles, ❛ i don't mind anyhow. i'm new here ! i'm excited to get to know everyone ! come on then, student-san, would you like a fresh meat bun ? ❜

inumaki’s here for backup more than anything, slotting comfortably into the role of heckler #1 to megumi’s thug boss-slash-gang leader? he’s not quite sure what the first year is going for, but he’s picking fights with those his own size (that is, kyoto jujutsu high’s own assortment of first years), which is all inumaki, as a senior to his impressionable juniors, can ask for.

…well, if there’s one piece of advice to give here, it’s probably to pick on a little less at a time, especially if you’re on your own. inumaki’s good at curse suppression, but his methods are a little too lethal for wrangling kids.

and there they go again. man, he remembers being a first year. all that hot-blooded passion with nowhere to go, bubbling and boiling over at just a few taunts, egos gearing up for a fight over their modest amount of pride. oh, to be young and full of righteous indignation.

but he’s on megumi’s side right now, which means he should probably ensure that his team’s leader doesn’t get beaten down before he can prove himself. inumaki taps megumi’s shoulder twice to get his attention before directing a thumbs down at the group of kyoto high students — just to affirm his position on the tokyo high team — then he points at the teachers, gesturing at his own eyes a beat later. if you fight here where they can see, it implies. surely even kids this young can see where he’s going with this, right?

if megumi were a flower, hikaru thinks, he would bloom into some variant of a venus flytrap: more teeth than petal, more bite than beauty.

at first glance, hikaru wouldn’t have taken him for someone interested in becoming a host — the power and wealth required to attend ouran, singular scholarship student aside, tended to mean that its students were allowed to be where they wanted to be and to do as they wished, so long as they remained within the school compound and the loose confines of its rules. so if hikaru’s being honest, he’s unsure why megumi’s still here.

still, megumi is pretty enough to pass for a host, fascinating enough to unwittingly charm his way into tamaki’s soft, guileless heart, and the appeal of the ouran host club has always been in the variety of its selection. so, with an amount of commitment comparable to that of picking up a lost puppy, the host club — mostly tamaki — makes the decision to take him in.

megumi seems to be popular despite his stoic personality, which takes hikaru by surprise, since that domain is typically covered by mori-senpai. but then, the kind of people they are invariably attracts the kind of people who flock to the new and shiny, and megumi is fresh meat, blood in the water to the sharks of their guests.

…well. not just their guests. hikaru is, admittedly, a fan of the rare and unfamiliar. specifically, a fan of poking at them and seeing if they flinch.

none of them expect megumi to bite back. hikaru, in particular, doesn’t expect megumi to shift the dynamic in a way he would enjoy.

“do i look like someone who jokes around to you, megumi?” hikaru says in a patient deadpan, his grin a sharp edge. he curls a finger below megumi’s chin to tilt his head upward. “didn’t you want to learn to flirt? you’d better take this seriously.”
