Okay to summarize this basically means that we've figured out how to do things that stars do on a smaller scale on Earth, and we've gotten a net positive gain (~2MJ in -> ~3MJ out) of energy from it. This could legitimately revolutionize green energy.

Don't let this get buried. Don't let this get misconstrued. This is massive. I don't want to see this get the Nuclear Energy treatment of fearmongering and mass public denial.

World’s first: Fusion reaction produced more energy than was utilized to ignite it

Today, the U.S. Energy Department announced that scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California created more energy in a fusion reaction than was required to ignite it.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm stated that the achievement might pave the way for advancements in national security and sustainable energy.

Fusion proponents believe that it will one day produce almost limitless, carbon-free energy, supplanting fossil fuels and other traditional energy sources.

However, in order for fusion to be economically viable, it will need to provide significant power over a long period of time.
