Production Notes

Idea:

A gender reveal video for out of town friends and family to learn the baby’s gender with the couple.

Client Input:

Jen called me with this idea and we got to work on thinking how to reveal the gender visually. Helium balloons released from a box? No, released balloons can end up harming wildlife. Confetti balloon with a gender identifying color inside? Yes, we are a go!  Other than being sure no animals would be harmed by props that floated during the video, Jen was open to all ideas. We looked over songs to license. Jen choose the song we ended up using. I was a little skeptical because the song didn’t have a big build and crescendo section — which I thought would work well in editing with the big dramatic POP of the confetti balloon. I had a second song in mind with a good “pop” moment.

Jen also let me know that Scott would be popping the balloon with a scalpel. A nice bit of personalization as Scott is a surgeon. (This is where I say, don’t try this at home kids, he’s a professional.)

The Shoot:

It was a laid-back and natural shoot. Very little to no direction for most of the clips and absolutely no direction for the big gender reveal. I felt it was very important for that scene to be completely their natural response to the moment. 

(Warning: Spoiler Alert)

As you can see, the balloon did not pop. It sort of deflated. But as opposed to being a bad thing, I think this really made the video that much better.  Jen picked up the balloon and opened it to see the confetti. Then, Jen and Scott naturally touched the shredded pink paper and clasped hands. This sweet moment went perfect with the sweet song Jen had selected. I also think it is a great introduction to parenthood. Nothing is going to go how you planned! But inspite of that — or possibly because of that —  it will turn out better than you expected.

Result:

(I think Jen hit on something here in a general sense. People are so busy it’s easy to miss seeing how cute they are together and how their significant other looks at them. We end up not noticing as often as we should. Everyday family stuff is hard. We need touch stones to feel proud and keep us going when life gets to the busy daily grind. Photos and videos are one of the powerful ways to do that.)
