The Battle of the Somme lasted 140 days commencing on the 1st July 1916. Involving more than 3 million soldiers, this bloody battle would take the lives of a million men. It was essentially survival for soldiers on both sides, especially in the first moments of the Battle, when the allies attempted their big push against fortified German deeply entrenched positions. Using tunnelled explosives, massive artillery barrage and even tanks for the first time (albeit running at 6km/hr), the push was made to end the stalemate of the last years of fighting. The allies fought a series of battles along the area of the Somme river, as they attempted to advance forward. On the first day, approx 60,000 soldiers from the British Army alone died. This truly was a case of surviving the Somme as depicted on this Commando Comic cover. Lions lead by donkeys...
