Just another day in a Military bookstore... Most books I process into the store I tend to do a quick flick through the pages and see what drops out. We have several reference books on regimental histories and official records of this war and that. They are heavy with text and detail pertaining to the characters, orders of battles and what not linked with the conflicts they describe. They are purely for the serious collector who would like an enriched experience with their military history study. From a marketing perspective they are a nightmare due to their plain wrapper or cover with no illustration. We did a wee walk yesterday down on the Gold Coast as part of the kokoda Challenge events that raises money for veterans services. Lots of hard slog but putting into perspective not as tough when you look at the actual battle for the kokoda gap in 1942. Malaria and other tropical disease were rampant, the intense jungle battle over high mountains and muddy trails over New Guinea brought about a primitive aggression as prisoners were tortured and executed and reports of cannibalism occurring. Just finished processing another lot of Military books into the store and found two rare beauties both connected with an ironic theme. 'The Iraqi Army Defence Force Anniversary' book is gifted to the Australian Defence Force from the Iraqi Embassy. The book highlights the last 60 odd years up to the 1980s of the glories of the Iraqi Army whose Commader in Chief graces the inside cover. Move forward a few decades and one can see the irony of such a gift. Another gift book (presented to the world in this case) is 'Germany Speaks' where Adolf Hitler and his political team explain their policies and how they are intended for global peace and internal security. Written in 1938, such a book would have been published at a time when the Munich Conference was in full swing. A Conference where Germany was trying to deflect international fears of its true intentions. Both fascinating reads and you will be hard pressed to locate anywhere else in their first edition condition.
