A Sermon for August 20th: The Raycats That Aren’t (Yet)
Siblings in the Atom, not all attempts at nuclear semiotics are carved in stone or built of steel. Some are carved in laughter, in imagination, and in the delightful strangeness of human creativity. Today we turn our gaze not to pyramids or warning signs, but to cats. Specifically, the fabled raycats.
The Raycat Proposal
Back in the 1980s, when researchers were debating how to communicate danger across ten thousand years, a strange idea emerged: genetically engineer cats so that they change color when exposed to radiation. Since cats have lived alongside humans for thousands of years, the hope was that people would notice if their feline companions suddenly started glowing green or shifting to an ominous shade of blue. Pair this with folklore, art, or even a catchy tune, and the lesson might endure: if your cat turns colors, don’t hang around here.
It sounds bizarre, but that was the point. Sometimes a weird idea sticks in our cultural memory longer than a solemn one. (How many warning signs have you ignored today, and how many cat videos have you watched this week?)
Why We Don’t Embrace the Raycat—Yet
Here in the Church of the Atom, we have a simple reason not to include raycats in our theology: they don’t exist. To pretend otherwise would be to risk misleading future generations into believing all cats can sense radiation, which could cause tragedy. Some proposals even suggested releasing these engineered cats around nuclear waste sites, letting their fur color be a living warning system. But as anyone who has seen feral cat colonies knows, letting cats roam free in fragile ecosystems can devastate wildlife. It would be a disservice both to the earth and to the cats themselves.
If raycats ever are created — in some far-off future — then we will happily welcome them into our theology. They should be companions, not wild sentinels: cared for, loved, and given warm laps to curl up on, not turned loose to starve in the desert.
The Song That Lasts
The playful idea of raycats even inspired music. The song “An Earworm to Last 10,000 Years” carries on the spirit of embedding warnings in culture through art and memory. A joke? Perhaps. But one carrying a serious message: sometimes the silly outlives the serious.
Our Lesson in Playfulness
So what do the raycats teach us? That imagination matters. That play and creativity can spark awareness where solemn warnings fail. The raycat is a reminder that communication with the future may not always be grim, but strange, joyful, and even a little absurd.
And yet, dreaming alone is not enough. We can sit around forever dreaming of raycats, monuments, or warning songs — but if we never act, those dreams remain nothing more than words. The raycat teaches us to laugh, but also to build, to preserve, and to warn. We must take our imagination and anchor it in action.

The atom is not only deadly but deeply human. It inspires monuments, songs, and yes — even rainbow cats. Let us hold to this lesson: when we face impossible futures, our best tools may not be fear and solemnity, but creativity, play, and action.
