Just Listen: The Amazons - Heart of Darkness
Just Listen: The Amazons – Heart of Darkness
The Amazons Heart of Darkness
Words by Gary Lambert
Released as part of The Amazons’ Expanded Edition of Future Dust, Heart of Darkness is the sound of a rock band preparing for the days when arenas and stadiums welcome them with open arms.
When you listen to Heart of Darkness, you might want to do so with industrial safety wear on because it is so powerful that the music almost appears visual.…

Top 20 Albums of the Year 2019
Let me start this by saying that 2019 has been one of the best years for new music that I can remember. From incredible debuts to career-best records from some of the world’s most renowned artists, everybody seemed to step up their game. Commercial rock and pop music had a great year, with some outstanding, truly original music emerging from the dirge that has plagued the genres for so long. With that being the case, it made my job of compiling my Albums of the Year list extremely difficult.
From around 200 albums, I have somehow managed to get down to a list of 20 incredible albums (well technically 21 but shh!) that I’m happy to call my Albums of the Year. There were a lot of tough casualties along the way, with honourable mentions to Danny Brown, Bring Me The Horizon, Hot Chip and Matthew & The Atlas in particular.
I should also disclose that the top 10 albums on this list really could have ended up in any order, as I struggled to favour one over another. These are very much different albums for different moods, which meant there was an awful lot of shuffling and reshuffling. In the end, I looked at the albums I had listened to the most over the course of the year and finally decided on this final ranking.
So, without any further ado, let’s get started….
20. Future Dust by The Amazons
When I saw The Amazons live recently, they were selling t-shirts with “Rock & Roll is the new Rock & Roll” emblazoned across the front. In a world that is seemingly so quick to proclaim rock music is dead or surviving on heritage alone, The Amazons stand tall and defiant. It is this rebellious attitude that pumps through Future Dust, the Reading quartet’s sophomore record, making it one of the most enjoyable listens of the year.
Back with a more refined and mature sound, Future Dust is the natural evolution for the band following their outstanding eponymous debut in 2017. The anthems remain, but the hooks are bigger and the riffs bolder. Everything on here is manufactured to hit the listener hard and often, and it always does.
From the surging riffs of colossal opener Mother, the hopping melodies of 25, to the more subdued All Over Town, The Amazons show they are a real rock band with a truly timeless sound. This is propelled by lead guitarist Chris Andersen, who has very quickly become for me, one of the best shredders on the planet. Nothing shows this off better than the brilliant Dark Visions, a vicious rock anthem laced with stinging riffs, that already in its short life feels like a classic.
All in all, Future Dust is The Amazons setting themselves on a trail-blazing mission to keep rock music relevant and in the mainstream, and 2019 showed they’ve already achieved this with great success. From increased airplay for their singles to playing bigger rooms right across the country, people are rallying around their cause and coming along for the ride. Rock & Roll really is the new Rock & Roll!
