What the hell is a “Hell Event”?
(22 Aug. 2019 - Updated to take into account the many new hell event types that have been introduced since this was first written. Sorry for how long this is, there’s just a lot to cover.)
“Hell Event” is the term that Love Nikki players have lovingly given to a specific type of event that happens in Love Nikki because it costs thousands and thousands of diamonds. The suits are generally more elaborate and more detailed than regular event suits and they usually go on for longer than regular events. There are often, but not always, major suits and minor suits; the minor suits are generally simpler and cheaper. These events are also returning events; the suits never return for crafting or to the shop; rather, the event comes back. Please see below for more details about returns.
Hell events come in a variety of formats. I’ll try my best to cover them all here but it’s possible I might miss one. So! The most common type of hell event format is the milestone/node format. You use diamonds to collect event items and upon reaching a certain amount of event items, you’ll hit a milestone/node upon which you’ll get pieces of suits or a whole suit. In some hell events, there is an order to what suits you might get at a node; in other hell events, it’s mostly random. Some are just this simple, some are more complicated. There is one pick and choose hell event which was just recently (as of 22 Aug. 2019) released on the Chinese server. It’s a little more complicated than your normal pick and choose but in an attempt to keep this short (ahahaha) I won’t get into here. If you want more info, check out Iri’s video about the event. You usually receive minor suits either at a node or pavilion style, receiving pieces or the whole suit randomly as you pull for event items.
And now let’s bring the pain! As mentioned, hell events are called hell events because of their high cost. It is important to note that, for most but not all hell events, the cost increases the first time the hell event returns (so far, there has been no cost increase when they return after that).
If you’re only interested in going after the major suits and ignoring anything that comes after the last major suit, the cheapest hell event is 6690 diamonds (the return cost of Caelum et L’Ocean aka mermaid hell event) and the most expensive is 12990 (Tree of Memories, which has not arrived to the global server). If you need everything from the event, including the items that you’ll get after you finish all the major suits, then the cost can increase quite a bit. The most expensive hell event, if you want the SSRs (Super Super Rare items, with an extremely low drop rate) that come with it and thus 100% complete it, is Flowing Garden (aka WFSM) at 27k diamonds. (Flowing Garden has no cost increase when it returns.)
It should be noted, for the free-to-play people and/or the newbies out there: It is possible to complete hell events without spending any money, I promise. I fully completed two Hell Events when I was V0 and got to the third node on a third one. You will have to save like crazy and be very picky about what you get from regular events, but it is possible.
New hell events are released every 2-3 months (more often 3 than 2) and return anywhere between 5-12 or 9-12 months after they were first introduced. There is some debate about the time periods between both new and returning events due to Miracle Concert, which is not in the Story Suit tab but has the same format as another hell event, returns like a hell event, and is more expensive than the cheapest hell event. If you count Miracle Concert as a hell event, then the returns happen 5-12 months after the debut/return; if you don’t count it as one, they happen 9-12 months after the debut/return. I personally tend to think of Miracle Concert as a mini-hell event because I think it sits in a weird place between a regular event and a hell event.
This does mean that as the game goes on, there will be more and more hell events. I highly recommend looking at past and future hell events and picking out just a few to save up for and skipping the rest. At this point, I’m not sure it’s possible to be a new player and finish both new and returning hell events without spending quite a bit of money. You can see pictures of all the hell events that exist, on both our server and other servers, in this amazing post on the LN subreddit.
Hell events are something we all have a love/hate relationship with. On the one hand, they’re some of the most gorgeous suits in the entire game and the community, generally, has a celebratory feel to it when a hell event happens which makes it even more fun. On the other hand, there’s much weeping and gnashing of teeth as people realize they don’t have enough diamonds and/or watch their diamonds disappear.
Basically, hell events are An Experience, for better or for worse.
